Default Editing boot.ini - directly boot DOS?

Hello!

I have Windows 98 and DOS operating systems installed on my computer
and have a question about boot.ini.

How to edit boot.ini file to directly load DOS operating system?

When I start computer I want from him to go directly to DOS, not to
load Win98...

How to do that? (I think that I have to edit boot.ini file, but I don't
know which parameter to change)

Also it would be great if you could tell me how to get computer in the
first state (loading win98) later.

Any help will be welcome!

Are you talking about 98 first edition or 98 Second Edition which has
USB support? Sometimes people forget to mention 98SE when they just say
98. What are you trying to accomplish with your computer?

If you want to start with win98's dos-mode with C:\ prompt etc,
you should edit the file msdos.sys and change the BootGUI-line to
BootGUI=0
that means not booting into the graphical user interface.

That way you don't have to wait for windows to start
if you want to run old dos-games and such.

this way you will start the dos-version that comes with win98.

if you want to run an another version of DOS (freedos?)
you have on another harddisk-partition you have to use a boot-menu.
If you want to run an older version of DOS like ver 5.0
you had installed on C: before windows98 you can insert the lines
BootMenu=1
and
BootMulti=1
to get a menu at bootup to chose if you want to start windows or
the older dos.

(when you want to start windows from dos you just have to enter command
win
just like in windows3.11)

I have Win98 SE.

What am I trying to accomplish -- When I start computer (pwr ON) I
want from computer to directly boot to DOS, to avoid loading Windows98
SE.

For my application DOS is enough and I there is no reason for me to
load Windows every time that my computer starts. When I start computer
I want from him to boot to DOS (command prompt) directly.

What do I have to change in boot.ini (or other files) to accomplish
that?

hmm... where did my other (longer) answer go?

edit msdos.sys to have the line
BootGUI=0

instead of 1

You are still mistaken; boot.ini is a NT/XP/W2K file; msdos.sys is the
correct file (as teebo says).

In addition to adding BootGUI=0 to msdos.sys, as mentioned elsewhere,
I add the following lines to my autoexec.bat file.

choice /c:WD /n /t:W,3 Boot to (W)indows or (D)OS?
if errorlevel 2 goto end
win
:end

No such animal.

You don't.

What happen to F8, or F5 keys?

How to do that? (I think that I have to edit boot.ini file, but I don't

May not be good if you're loading TSRs specifically for your msdos
environment, then go to windows later. Devil's in the details.
