Should I increase my RAM?
It looks like your problem is that you have too many programs running,
possibly (probably) background programs that are eating up both memory and CPU cycles. Use the System Information tool and post back with a list of startup programs. -- Richard G. Well, half of us do not use web authoring apps and the other half of us do not know which you use, because you did not tell us. Your quickest solution might be to instal this app on someone else's PC, same speed (350 MHz i.e. very slow for 2005) and min. 265 Mb RAM, and see if the pages scroll fast enough to suit you. You can then decide if you need a faster CPU as well. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

While I agree with Lil' Dave and Richard that you most likely have a lot
more running in the background than you think -- or rather, you don't apparently realize the amount of resources that can be sucked up by "...a few programs running in System Tray." -- it *could* also be a problem with the program itself and/or video card. You're being awfully shy with details. *What* web authoring program? What brand video card (and how much RAM onboard that card?) What background (Tray) apps are you running? In particular, what antivirus? -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Richard" wrote in message ... Hi. General Information Memory Utilization: 100% Total Physical Memory: 160 MB (167772160 Bytes) Available Physical Memory: 312 KB (319488 Bytes) Page File Capacity: 1889 MB (1980272640 Bytes) Available Page File capacity: 1712 MB (1795661824 Bytes) Largest free block: 319 MB (334413824 Bytes) Swap File pages: 40822 16-Bit USER free percentage: 28% 16-Bit GDI free percentage: 59% It looks like you've used up just about 99.805% of your RAM, and then used another (1889 - 1712 =) 176 MB of swap file. 160 MB + 176 MB = 336 MB used up if you had the RAM. I would look towards upgrading to either 384 MB or 512 MB of RAM, preferably 512 MB if possible. If you are trying to impress me about how well the swap file substitutes for RAM, you've done a whopper of a job there! Your low USER free percentage probably means that if you open two instances of Word and try to print, you may have a printer driver failure because you used your last percentage of resources to run the printer driver, and you'll have to reboot. Maybe some security software you have is hogging the resources (firewall, or AV program). It is getting very difficult to find products off the retail shelf that work on a machine without depleting resources nowadays. The only way out of that situation, barring replacing the offending programs with less offensive programs, is to buy a new computer with Windows XP on it. If you work offline all the time, you could take the internet security software off of your machine, or just disable it in msconfig. Maybe other items in msconfig could be unchecked to allow for mure User resources, but the numbers I see here (above & below) indicates to me that it would be your security software. Your largest free block of 319 MB seems to me that you need to do a defrag, and soon. Everytime you boot up, another 10 MB to 20 MB of that is liable to get used up. This is the situation with just System Information program running: General Information Memory Utilization: 88% Total Physical Memory: 160 MB (167772160 Bytes) Available Physical Memory: 31.3 MB (32874496 Bytes) Page File Capacity: 1889 MB (1980272640 Bytes) Available Page File capacity: 1747 MB (1831501824 Bytes) Largest free block: 319 MB (334413824 Bytes) Swap File pages: 40822 16-Bit USER free percentage: 41% 16-Bit GDI free percentage: 76% System information program is NOT the only thing running... |

Should I increase my RAM?
Okay, so I have Pentium II, with Win98SE, speed 350 Mhz.
I'm running a web authoring program called SiteSpinner. I've got ATI Xpert98 AGP 2x Video Accelerator Card using Rage Pro Turbo set, with 8Mb of SDRAM. (3D and 2D video accelerator card). I think in fact that my computer was much affected when I upgraded from Norton SystemWorks 2001, to 2005 I think I may have a CPU usage problem more than a video card problem. How do I pysche out a CPU usage problem? Ccapp sometimes crashes, and half the time my PC does not shut down. It is bloatware that affects Win Me machines just as badly. Uninstall the AV portion of NSW from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel...you don't have to uninstall ALL of NSW 2005 (upgrades may be a different matter though, a fresh install of NSW 2005 without the AV portion will do this right provided you got rid of NSW 2001 properly, yeah right.) You can download AVG 7 from www.grisoft.com first and then run the application once the NAV is uninstalled, but turn off your modem during the time you are replacing the anti-virus programs. This replacing of the AV program is to stop ccApp from crashing your machine, your resources may not show ANY improvement. Maybe somebody else knows what else to stop about Norton (besides all of it) to bring that number up. What I said before about swap file and lack of RAM will still apply, but NSW 2005 itself tends to use well over 150 MB of RAM. |
