Default No support no more?

Hey,

I see in the paper this morning that MS is dropping support for
98,and ME. I guess we can forget about the old 3.1 or DOS.That is
soooo 20th century.

Does this mean we can't get drivers and such anymore? I want to
make my system last a little longer. Does what I want and no need
to go the XP route yet.Soon that will be considered old.I hate the
registration BS you have to go through.

Any good sites to use in the future for drivers and more?? Please
list them if you can.

Drivers aren't written by Microsoft but rather the hardware manufacturer.

What end of support means is that Microsoft will not be releasing any new
security patches or other hotfixes for Win me and you will no longer be
able to phone Microsoft for help but instead have to use peer to peer
support such as this newsgroup. This newsgroup should continue for some
time yet, likewise the Windows Update site and the Microsoft Download
Centre should both continue to be available to download patches and the
like.

list them if you can.

It's totally pointless in listing any sites since I don't have a clue as
to your hardware. The best place to look for drivers is on the hardware
manufacturers' sits such as nVidia, ATI, Creative, etc. Note however
that few new Win Me compatible drivers will be written in future, one
reason being that a lot of current and upcoming hardware simply isn't Win
Me compatible.

all the sites will still be there for the immediate future - MS are
maintaining Windows Updates for at least the next 12 months AFAIK, and also
the Windows Updates Catalog.
For drivers - go to the equipment manufacturer's site.

Mike,

I know most drivers are not MS products. It's just sad to see ME ending.
You are right, the hardware is not what it used to be.

Looks like I need to get a new computer. Be nice to Bill Gates. Can't even
run media player 10 with ME. Now need XP, have waited long enough.

dogsdad.

You are right, the hardware is not what it used to be.

Hardware today is immeasurably better and also more complicated today
whilst costing less than ever than six years ago when Win Me was first
launched.

As for support for Win Me ending, I'd be interested to know what support
you think you will miss? The odd security patch maybe? Many recent
viruses haven't targeted the old Win 9x systems such as Win Me and
provided that one runs a decent firewall or NAT enabled router and uses
and keeps up to date a virus scanner then users running Win Me shouldn't
experience problems with their Win Me machines although this does require
the user to follow the rules for safe hex and not click and install
everything they are offered on the net.

Can't even run media player 10 with ME

Personally I can't think of one good reason why I would want to use WMP10
and I'm running XP. The same is true of WMP11, 9, 8 and 7. I prefer to
make my own decisions as to the applications I run on my PC and that
doesn't mean I automatically choose Microsoft as my supplier. Having said
that tomorrow my views regarding the use of WMP may well be different from
those I have today.

Hi Mike and Noel,

Perhaps this link will help some people realize the motives of change and
re-emphasize what you two have been saying all along.

Agreed - it still makes one or two errors of fact (from a quick skim-read),
but at least the tone isn't as recriminatory as many I've seen
