erasing hard drive and reloading windows
I have purchased a new computer. On the old computer I
plan to reformat the hard drive and reload windows 98 onto the computer. I have the windows 98 Upgrade cdrom I used to upgrade from windows 95 to windows 98. I need to know if this cdrom is going to have all the setup files I will need to reload windows 98 after I have formatted the hard drive. |

If you have the upgrade to windows 98, you will need windows 95 , because
the upgrade needs to find a previous version (as far as I am aware) Don't forget to make a start up disk for your cd rom, just in case. Though there others far more knowledgable than I, so you may want to wait for another answser "bill conley" wrote in message ... I have purchased a new computer. Bruce is correct. You cannot install the upgrade version without Windows
verifying during the installation process that you have a previous or current version of Windows that makes you eligible for upgrading. Rather than formatting, install to a new folder. The upgrade version will see this on your hard drive and not ask for Win95. Be sure that you change the installation folder to \windows because when you rename the old Windows folder as instructed, Windows will see that and default to installing over that installation. If you rename the \windows and \program files folders as instructed, you can delete these folders after your installation is complete and you are sure that all went well with the installation. You can also delete all other folders (except the new \windows and \program files folders on your computer and then defragment the hard drive. Defrag is found at Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools. This will be about as close as you can get to a clean installation without a Win95 CD for the compliance check. there is a possibility that it will have the driver you
need. Windows should just be able to update the drivers from windows 95. I dont think there should be a problem with that, so go ahead and update to 98.
