Default Winblows98 control panel and printer panel abends

Every time I try to start my Control Panel or Printers panels lately I get
three abends and the panels don't appear.

The first set occurs when I click on Control Panel. I get abends:
APPXT32.DLL abending at 0167:1007be53
Kernel32.DLL abending at 0167:BFF8AC13
UNKNOWN abending at 0000:00AB7496 with a divide error.

The second occurs when I click on the Printers tab on the Start menu button.
I get the same first two abends as above, and the third is
Kernel32.DLL at 0167:BFF7B9F5

Any idea what's causing this or how to fix it?

FWIW, my kids unplugged my scanner 2 weeks ago and I haven't been able to get
it working (HP ScanJet 5100c). The printer was piggy-backed on the scanner and
it hasn't worked since either. I replaced the ink cartridges, which were empty
or nearly so. Trying to print a test page doesn't work either, and the printer
now has a momentary grinding noise (HP DeskJet 3820). I've uninstalled and
reinstalled the driver software for both of these, but it hasn't helped. I've
also tried disconnecting the scanner and connecting the printer directly to the
parallel port. No good there either. Is this all related, more the Windows
abends to the earlier problem than vice-versa? The Windows abends just started
today.

Some years back I had a nice W95 system with a HP510 printer. I bought
a scanner and found that I had to (as you say) piggy-back the printer
behind the scanner. Everything worked perfectly. The scanner *didn't
even have to be switched on* for the printer to work.

Now I'm running W98SE and I've done the same thing with the same kit.
The printer works fine. The scanner with the printer piggy-backed works
fine - BUT - only if the scanner is switched on. If the scanner isn't
switched on, the printer won't work, so I have to waste the scanner bulb
to use the printer, which is a real nuisance. If the scanner's not
switched on I get weird error messages similar to yours.

This means your printer is somehow not completely connected, and it
sounds like your scanner isn't, either.

Makes me wonder: if, when your kids 'unplugged' the scanner, they
loosened some internal connection. I found, to my cost, that if you
yank a bit too hard, things fall apart inside, and maybe that's what's
happened to you. I went to plug my external modem into the correct
socket, and the socket dropped off into the insides of the box.

It might be worthwhile checking your internal connections, especially as
your printer is obviously trying to work. You never know, your kids
could have pulled too hard.

I've been going back and forth with HP for the past few days. The printer's
toast. It's disconnected. I'm seeing if they'll cut me a deal on a laser as
this DeskJet made it through only about 4000 pages before it bit the dirt. At
$100 plus $50 in ink, that's almost 4 cents a page. Pretty expensive.

I plugged the scanner (HP ScanJet 5100c) back in (green light's on) and tried
to start it. A message box claims the scanner is in use by another application.
I never saw this before it was unplugged. I unloaded and reloaded the scanner
software (but not the drivers! DOH!) and I still get the error.

So now my printer AND my scanner are out of commission. I won't mention the
CDRW for fear I'll jinx that, too. DOH! Just did!

BTW, Internet Exploder crashes when I try to start it (it does start after some
bitching, but then crashes when I try to access a particular website for my
college class to download some tools). The printer and control panels abend
also. Any clues?

Re your printer - do you have an opportunity to try it out (and its
s/ware) on another machine, like a friend's? Maybe there's nothing
wrong with the printer.

"A message box claims the scanner is in use by another application."
What happens when you switch off and switch on again, another
application surely can't be running. What does Ctrl-Alt-Del say is
running? Have you tried seeing what is running via Start Programs
Accessories System Tools System Information ?

It sounds to me like you need to save any of your personal files (.docs,
..jpgs, emails, whatever) you can (hard to do if your CDRW isn't working)
and consider a total wipe and reinstall: FDISK and FORMAT. You could,
of course, have a virus that is causing your problems. Maybe a registry
problem as well. Do you have an earlier working version of your
registry that you can reinstall, to see if that fixes the problem?

If you want to wipe your drive and start again, please post back if you
need any advice. I do this myself once a year every January :-)

When the printer makes a grinding noise when the print head hits home base? HP
says its fried. They want me to buy another. No thanks. I'll go back to lasers.
