outlook express
On my own computer, running Windows 98, some time ago I upgraded to IE and
Outlook Express 6.0. My computer imediately started to malfunction. I solved the problem by deleting Outlook Express 6.0 and reloading the 5.0 version. Now an elderly friend of mine has the same problem. He recently upgraded to Outlook Express 6.0 and now gets all sorts of error messages and crashes. The computer has no viruses and no spyware causing the problem. It was running normally before the addition of OE 6.0. I wanted to try the fix that worked on my computer but earlier versions of Outlook express no longer seem to be available for download. Can anyone suggest a solution? |

Not sure this will help, but one of the first things I try with OE
malfunctions is IE Repair. -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "Rick" wrote in message ... On my own computer, running Windows 98, some time ago I upgraded to IE and Outlook Express 6.0. I solved the problem by deleting Outlook Express 6.0 and reloading the 5.0
version. Exactly how did you go about doing this? (NRN) ...Now an elderly friend of mine has the same problem. He recently upgraded to Outlook Express 6.0 and now gets all sorts of error messages and crashes. What errors? Please post them in their entirety/ Is the machine fully up-to-date at Windows Update? Is an anti-virus application installed, up-to-date & working properly? It is NOT a good idea to run mixed versions of IE and OE. Doing so may cause more problems than the minor ones you were trying to fix. General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place. - WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update, installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data loss in the futu http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-98af2256ccc3 This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook Express/WinXP SP2. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- OE6-specific newsgroup: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...tlooke xpress OE General newsgroup: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...xpress.general ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE, Shell/User, Security), Aumha.org VSOP, DTS-L.org Rick wrote: On my own computer, running Windows 98, some time ago I upgraded to IE and Outlook Express 6.0.
