QT Recommendation
I've developed some problems with Quicktime Alternative that I can't seem to
correct (crashes 100% of the time opening mov files), so I'm going to try the ultimate workaround of deleting it and installing Quicktime. What is the best version for Win98SE? I would define "best" as the last version of QT for 98 that really works well. Since I'd expect that the poster would have it installed, I'd also appreciate information on security patches, if any, that should be installed as a follow-up. |

I've got 6.5.2 installed (I think this is the last version for 98), and it's never crashed on me, so you could be OK. I've never seen standalone security patches for QT; I always assumed that whichever ones may have been needed would have been part of the next version. Bear in mind that more recent encoding methods for .mov files (I can't remember what they're called - H.something) won't play in anything short of v7 (which won't run on 98). -- Regards Nigel Stapley www.judgemental.plus.com reply-to will bounce |

But given that it has never found any updates for it, I assume it's the 'end-of-the-road' version as well. QT v7 won't run on anything older than W2K or XP. -- Regards Nigel Stapley www.judgemental.plus.com reply-to will bounce |

The situation with QT-alt, which was OK not that long ago, was much worse than I thought. I didn't even have to open anything with it; merely trying to close it crashed Windows. So I tried to uninstall it through add-remove and also IIRC its own uninstaller and it crashed Windows. I was making the psychological adjustment one does before a manual program delete when I decided to try uninstalling it in safe mode. I even got an error message there, but thankfully it did go through with the uninstall. So now, with the machine wiped clean of QT plug-ins and errant Explorer and registry entries, I'm going to try QT-alt again. If the problem recurs, it's on to 6.5.2 (and if the problem recurs there [and it could].....) |

Spelt is the original spelling AKA British English AKA Queen's English. Spelled is the American revisionism. Other examples are colour vs color, centre vs center, aluminium vs aluminum and, appropriately, titbit vs tidbit. |
