Default problems after re-install of W98SE

x-no-archive: yes
Hi.
Irrecoverable problems with trying to boot Win98SE (himem.sys is missing or
corrupted, etc etc accompanied by immediate shutdowns - totally
inexplicable) led me to reinstall Win98SE. Used emergency bootdisk made 2
yrs ago, installed Win98SE so it installed on top of (replacing) previous
installation.
So, I have lost all settings ofr OE, IE, shortcuts to programs etc.
Re-installed MS Office, got OE & IE working again.

However, I seem to have lost icons - for example at top of the 'Start' menu
panel the 'new..' and 'open office document' icons are MS-Dos ones, and the
icons displayed next to the files (e.g. .docs, .xls, etc) are just the
ms-dos ones. Any thoughts that might help me?
Thanks.

1. c:\windows\start menu
is just a folder like any other i.e. you can
add items, remove them, reorganize etc.
2. Most icons are governed by File Association
(documented in your help file) i.e. would be
correctly restored if associated with the correct
EXE file.

Right click those items and get properties and change icon. That may
work.

Thanks, Don (I would really love to visit Canada one day...)

Used: My Computer, View, Folder Options, File Types, Change Icon - and
changed them all successfully to what they should be.
[Still don't know why the correct ones weren't displayed to start with....]

On the Start menu, right-clicking on the properties of 'new...' and 'open
office document' shows the 'change icon' button as greyed out..... So
Istill have the dos icons (anonymous application ones if you know what I
mean.)
Any more thoughts?
Thanks for the help. Appreciated.

Right click them, get properties then copy/paste this line into the
Target box. This is for New Document.
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE" -n

This is for Open:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE" -f

Then try "change icon"

This Target line in a shortcut will bring up the screensaver.
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE" -s

Thanks. Tried it.
Unfortunately, the Target boxes are greyed out, and clicking inside them
does not drop a cursor there or make them active.
Any more ideas?
TIA.

Those shortcuts are in the C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu folder. Create new
ones or change them with the target lines I suggested. You can add
shortcuts or delete them in that folder.

That may do it.

!!! That did it !!!

Deleted the 'dead' shortcuts in the C:\windows\startup folder & made new
ones following your guidance. Now the links to New... and Open... in the
Start menu actually work, & I've got Office 'flag' type icons there.
Many thanks for your patience & help. Appreciated )
