Win98SE CD from copy won't install on new used computer!
HI, I just got a newish used hard drive and searched all over the Net
for how to freshly install my Windows 98SE and followed all the directions but it won't do the setup from the CD part. I downloaded the files from bootdisk.com ( excellent source by the way), and burned the files from my Windows, Options, Cabs folder to a CD. Now, I turned on the computer, and did the Start Computer without CD rom support and fdisked, though it wouldn't let me make 2 partitions (another quest) and formatted. Now I rebooted enabling CD start support and these command prompts came up. I tried everyone I could D:\setup, changed to E and F ( which are the letters assigned to my CDrom and CDrw drive...nothing worked. I saw one place where it said put just CD, then setup, and that didn't work, so please help me from this prompt and include any spaces, think it might be some little thing I am doing wrong that is causing this ( my computer experience). A:\ Also, my recovery CD won't go through the first set of screens either, though it is getting old as I tried that avenue. The boot disk from bootdisk.com has enough CD drivers to get going doesn't it, as it just seemed to nix my commands. Anyway, will wait for your expertise and assistance before I go any further. Thanks for listening, DD |

A:\ This is a DOS prompt. To do anything you have to know the appropriate DOS commands, e.g. E: or DIR or CHKDSK, depending what you want to do. We assume your system CD and boot floppy include everything you need. E.g. after creating the CD did you verify its completeness? Win98SE CD from copy won't install on new used computer!
When you burned the CD, was there a setup.exe file in your options folder?
I suspect that the folder may not have had all the required files. As far as the commands go, see my instructions at the web site Don provided. BUT, before you do anything, lets get the partitioning problem sorted out. Using fdisk, you can create a primary partition and an extended partition that contains one or more logical partitions. What exactly were you having problems with? -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "psongman" wrote in message oups.com... Win98SE CD from copy won't install on new used computer!
HI, well it didn't give me an option to partition basically. On my
researching it said it would, like select entire drive, etc. that never came up. So, I am beginning to believe that Windows 98SE is a lot different than Windows 98, I am not getting the option boxes, in other words. On the setup procedure, I will read the stuff from the website I was directed to. I really want to copy the files to my hard drive and then exe or setup from there. I have followed all those directions to, nothing works. I think when you have done all these procedures before you learn a little tip or trick that is not in the follow-these methods. I record a lot of music and it is always some little thing like a space not shown here and there or a back or forward slash that the writer entered incorrectly. Anyway, thanks for all the assistance. We will get this puppu up and running by nightfall. DD P.S. How to check if what I need on the CD will do it might be a good start? |

Win98SE CD from copy won't install on new used computer!
Ok, I spent the last hour and a half attempting some of the things
mentioned. First of all I checked the CD I burned and there is a setup.exe file in there. Now, I thought I would go the route of copying the files from the CD to the hard drive. I keep following the commands and here is what I get, either mkdir already exists md windows already exists md windows cabs already exists When I check Drive E, it says volume drive E Windows 98Se CD, now do I have to always be typing in Win98SEcd or just Win98, see these little things can stop the setup under cabs though it says 0 files 0 bytes 1 dir 0 bytes Now, I copied the Windows Options Cabs files from the folder, so maybe that is a nono The computer doesn't seem to be copying the files from the CD, or are they already in the directories mentioned above and I just need to access them. Well, I though a bit more info would help because I know from past assistance that all the data the more experienced have, the better they can diagnose and dissect your problem and get you up and running. I have a feeling it is the CD drive but not sure, as it did say what was in the volume. So, will wait for some more help, much appreciated. I do have to have it up and running for the RoadRunner guy though (yes, Broadband), so please keep the replies coming in, appreciate it, DD |

Try typing "dir /s /a e:\setup.exe". This should give you the directory in
which the file is located. Then type the drive and path, followed by the file name, for example, is the directory is "e:\windows\options\cabs", type e:\windows\options\cabs\setup.exe Ben "psongman" wrote in message oups.com... Win98SE CD from copy won't install on new used computer!
When it comes to partitioning a hard drive, W98 and W98SE are identical--see
the attached FDisk tutorial. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "psongman" wrote in message oups.com... This is a DOS utility, identical for all versions off Windows up to XP (and documented in DOS manuals in your city library.) When you run FDISK you see a succession of menus: 1. To log to a different hard drive (if there are two). 2. To make or remove Partitions. 3. Partitions for Win98 are either DOS Primary or Extended DOS. 4. When you use FDISK you must reboot DOS to implement your actions. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=255867 for more information about FDISK, i.e. all steps in hard drive preparation up to FORMAT. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Win98SE CD from copy won't install on new used computer!
Hi, yes, I don't get that succession of menus when I I run fdisk, but
how could it be corrupted, it is only booting from a boot disk made from bootdisk.com for Windows 98SE. I am really at a loss as to what is going in per this reinstall. I am going to pay this guy across the river from us to perform it, and I will place what occurred in some of these threads, to help others who might run into these snags when attempting to reinstall Win 98SE or copy files from a restore disk and accomplish it. There is some little ingredient that seems to be missing that won't allow the OS from setting itself up. Thanks for assisting and listening, DD |
