Default Firewalls

How can I find out if I'm using a firewall? What's the
best one to get and where do I go to find out how to use
one?

Thank you

If you don't know, then you're not! - Unlike Win XP, ME has no inbuilt
firewall, and you have to get one for yourself.
The best one? for what purpose?? - everyone on these groups will have their
own opinion (a bit like @ssholes - everyone's got one!,g) about which is
best, for their own reasons.

Starting out with a firewall is a scary business, because every time you do
anything, it'll pop up and say 'are you sure?' You need first to make sure
that your system is clean before installing one, or you could end up with a
hole the size of.. ..(on second thoughts, I'll forego that particular
alaogy!g) in the wall which no Dutch boy is going to be able to stem.

Having said that, the two most used firewalls in these groups tend to be
Zone Alarm, and Kerio, with a couple of others coming up close behind.
Personally, I use an older version of Kerio - it's simpler than the
latest/greatest, so it suits me better
Avoid anything Norton like the plague it is.

Last time I tried the Kerio 4.x series, Noel, it was still buggy after
several revisions. I prefer 2.1.5 anyway but did at least want to test 4.x.

I wonder about the current - no longer freeware - Tiny firewall. Given Kerio
2.x was derivred from Tiny PF, maybe today's Tiny - price not withstanding -
is the best software firewall?

Except that it no longer supports 9x.
