Default program to edit any (inactive) Windows registry file?

I had Windohs 95 installed on an old PC, but a hard disk crash
took out a load of programs. I can no longer boot from this
hard disk, but have a backup on DVD, including the Windows registry.
Now I would like to extract some registry keys (such as program
registrations and passwords).
Is there a program like regedit, which will open any Win9x
registry file, other than the active system.dat and user.dat?

Use regedit in DOS mode:

Using Registry Editor in Real Mode
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/131352

Assuming your Win95 registry is in the d:\windows directory, then the
following commands will export the relevant files to two text files in
your TEMP directory.

regedit /l:d:\windows\user.dat /e c:\windows\temp\user.txt
regedit /l:d:\windows\system.dat /e c:\windows\temp\system.txt

The above assumes that your CD-ROM driver is loaded by config.sys, and
that autoexec.bat contains mscdex.exe. This will be the case if you
boot from a startup diskette.

Alternatively, you could copy the files to your C: drive in GUI mode
and then run regedit in DOS mode.

Boot in Command Prompt (it does not work in DOS window when you are in
Windows), and type:

regedit /?

You'll see the options, that will allow you to work (in Command Prompt
only, too) with the Registry files other than the active system.dat and
user.dat.

In addition to the methods mentioned in this thread, there is a shareware utility to
do this, named Regdat v.1.3:

You can download it for the trial period, which may be as long as you need to use
it.
