DirectX v.9 should run OK on this PC.

More than 512 Mb RAM requires a couple
of tweaks to run smoothly -- see archives of this NG.

Don, thank You! I'll install it as soon as I backup some of

Agree.

And for information -- the latest dx9c update with Win98SE support is
directx_dec2006 update. More recent updates (directx_feb2007 and
directx_jun2007) do not support Win98SE.

What exactly does "Shell/User" denote?

That we focus our efforts on the MS Windows shell and the end use of
Windows. As opposed to specializing in server products, MS applications,
programming languages, etc. It's a catch-all that was instituted a few years
ago to replace the nomenclature that specified the version(s) of Windows we
are most involved with. You'll note that some old-timers still use more
specific nomenclature.

An FYI:

I agree, that many aspects will or may not install, such as *Microsoft.net*
segments [DirectX for managed code] which requires .net installed, and the
newer *x* support in NT5, however, the latest "websetup" CAN be used to
install 9.0c. It appears as you say though, the major updates/upgrades do
NOT apply.

The June 2007 web setup [which comes from the SDK team] will apply some
fixes to Win9X, *IF* a lower version of DirectX is installed. If 9.0c is
already installed and this setup follows the previous, it *may* not install
the files/update.
