Default vmm32.vxd - help!

Hi.

I've recently had need to flatten my PC, and I'm trying to
rebuild it, but I've having major problems with installing
Win98.

The setup process seems to go okay, but it always hits a
point where I get a message about not being able to load
c:windows\system\vmm32.vxd, it being either missing or
unloadable, and to restart my machine.

I've formatted and reinstalled several times now, and the
problem is always the same.

I've extracted vmm32.vxd from the cab files on the Win98
cd, and this seemed to move me on a stage where I needed
to extract another 50+ .vxd files from the cabs to
c:\windows\system\vmm32

Once I'd gone through all that, I got the error with
vmm32.vxd again.

I don't know where to go from here so any help would be
greatly appericated.

Thanks in advance

Gordon

Vmm32.vxd is compiled during the installation depending on your particular
hardware so extracting the base vmm32.vxd does not work (as you have found).

This article or the ones that it refers to might help:

Err Msg: The Following File is Missing or Corrupted:...VMM32.vxd

Thanks for replying - I followed the article, but the=20
problem remained. I now have a bigger problem - after the=20
last error message, I hit the reset switch, but instead of=20
rebooting, the PC remained on, but the powerlight went out.
The hard disk light stays on, and the power light only=20
comes on when the reset button is pushed, and it goes out=20
when the button is released.

The power doesn't work, and the only way to shut the PC=20
down is to switch off at the mains.

There is no output to the monitor, and if left for a=20
moment or two after switching the power on, the floppy=20
drive starts crunching and the internal speaker beeps like=20
mad.

So I've gone from a PC with no OS to a dead PC which I=20
can't afford to replace and a =A328 per month broadband=20
subscription which I can't use or cancel til november due=20
to being tied into a 12 month contract!!!

I know this isn't the place, but if anyone listening has a=20
suggestion or two whilst passing, I'd be indebted.=20
Meanwhile, I'm off to Dell to see if I can find a way to=20
fix my ancient POS.
