Vxd's and blk screens of death.
Hello all. I recently did a format and install of win98se. As the install
went well, upon installing drivers,(Ati, creative,Dlink) i recieved an error message stating that windows has a VXD problem and I need to run win setup utility again. This was on a black screen after which when told to press any key it turned off. Upon reboot, all hell broke loose. It rebooted 3 times and then came on without all the previously installed drivers. Almost like safe mode. From there i went to add remove programs and all software that was installed was not there to uninstall. The only thing that was there is what was installed after the reboot which was Sympatico's access manager. That was it. Now the computer is booting 8 outta 10 times with no errors, but when the errors come, man do they come, from blue screens to 3 or 4 reboots to the same black screen I have mentioned in the beginning. I am running AVG A/V, on a standalone comp(usually behind a firewall). I have spoke to techs and they have heard of VXD errors but nothing like what is happening here. I know the explanation is long so thanks for making to the end here and any info would be greatly appreciated....... Thanks |

It sounds like you have some hardware component failing. Since during the
boot process, the exact same files load in the exact same order each time, you should get the same results each time if you made no changes since you last booted. Virus and hardware failure are two things that can change this behavior so be sure to check for virus. If everything worked perfectly until the installation of Sympatico's access manager, then I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling it. Make sure that you check for any available updates. This article might also help. Troubleshooting Windows 98 Startup Problems http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=188867 If you are still receiving errors, please post the exact error. Something as general as "a VxD problem" isn't specific enough to give specific advice. PattyL "Lee" wrote in message ... Hello all. I recently did a format and install of win98se. Could be that what you tried to paper over with a "just re-install" is still alive and biting attempts to do that to death. -------------- ---- --- -- - - - - "I think it's time we took our friendship to the next level" 'What, gender roles and abuse?' -------------- ---- --- -- - - - - |
