Default Anybody experiencing problems at shutdown?

Greetings.
I am having shutdown problems more than I care for on Windows 98. It either
locks up with the "shutdown display" or it locks up with a blank screen.
Sometimes when I shutdown I get the "blue screen of death" - Windows error
screens with run-time errors during shutdown (though this happens less
frequently - thankfully). At all times that I get a shutdown error, when I
reboot, Windows runs the disk repair software automatically. Also, I have to
force a power-off by holding my on/off switch on my computer. Anyone else
having this problem? Is there a known cause/cure? I keep my system pretty
clean, so I'm not aware of any viruses or spyware that my software can
detect. I have a pentium 4 system (500 Mhz) with 256M of memory. No problems
operating, although at start-up (when I first power up) the system hangs for
a few seconds. After that all works well.

Thanks for the assistance and for reading.

If you can't fix it, "reboot" rather than "shutdown"; then, when it
starts the POST, hold in the power off button.

Do you have your resource meter in the Systray and if so what is its
reading when you get a failure? I think I will leave it there until you
reply as I have your problem and I live with it by shutting down after I
have built up sufficient resources to enable me to do so, but there is
quite a little story attached to the procedure.

Manny,

Try these:
Startup and Shutdown Problems
http://home.ptd.net/~bwatt/#Computer

Try # 2 or #3 depending on your version of Win98.

Also turn off any exit sounds, the wav file may be corrupt.
Try right clicking the icons in the systray next to the clock and
closing them one at a time just before shutting down or restarting
to find the culprit.

Start Run and enter Msconfig. Under Startup you can stop programs
from starting. They are not deleted when you uncheck them, you can
check them again.

My optical mouse tends to gum up the shutdown process. I have to reboot then go
to Command Mode and shutdown from there about 80% of the time. IE6 also hangs
the computer when closing the final browser window out for up to 2 minutes; I
blame eTrust AV for that.

I used to have random shutdown problems until I turned off video
caching in the BIOS setup. I also ensure that all applications have
terminated (Ctrl-Alt-Del) before shutting down.
