.Since the machine recognizes the total amount of Ram, it
sounds like they are imcompatible. I'm not sure what type
of Ram that is in the Aptiva, so my first comment is that
you may not have matched the new Ram with the same type as
the existing, i.e. DDR, SDR, EDO with or without error
correction, my second question is did you buy Ram specific
for IBM? Dell, IBM, Compaq usually "tweek" their ram so
quite often other types of Ram do not work well in these
machines. Hope this helps you solve your problem.

I'm sorry to be late getting back to you, but I can only work on the
computer on weekends most of the time.

It should be the same type of Ram, but it isn't IBM spesific, so I may

have
a problem with that. I'm just surprised that it seems to work half

way,
since it seems to be working in safe mode. I assumed that if I needed

IBM
spesific Ram it would not work at all?

Aina,
who will never buy an IBM or other brand name PC again. My even older

"bits
and pieces" clone never gave me this kind of trouble.

Try going to PNY and see what type of RAM you need according to their
Configurator: http://www.pny.com/configurator/ , perhaps you have the
totally wrong type. I was able to max out my RAM via that method:

Size PNY Part Number Retail Part Number OEM Part Number
64MB SDR Module 6480YESEM 64S100 308877-001
128MB SDR Module 6416ZESEM 128S100 308878-001

Thank you for the link, unfortunately I could not find my computer, they
didn't seem to have the IBM Aptiva 2178-840 on their lists.

kind regards
Aina

Well, that just bytes, hopefully there is a guru locally who can tell you
what type you need, or tweak your machine.

I'm sure that if I ask IBM they will help me, I tried to use a cheaper
source but it turns out to be not so clever.

regards
Aina

I meant check with the maker of the ram--not the store that sells it.

I have been buying Dells for years and have had no problems to speak
of--highly recommended company. When it comes to Ram, I have gotten lucky
matching no-name (or lesser known brands) and having them work OK; however,
when it came down to ordering ram for my laptop, I went to Crucial since
laptops can be very finicky with parts. Crucial guarantees the ram will
work.

I didn't think of trying that one alone, I will try just to see if the
match is the problem. I bought the ram at a store that sells computer

parts
with all kind of other stuff, so I doubt they can help me. But it wasn't

too
much money, so if I can't make it work it has to be written off as a
learning experience. As I said before, I think I will avoid brand name
computers in the future, they seem more expensive to upgrade than the
clones.

Did you try the new ram only? If it works OK, then the problem is

seemingly
that the old and new ram do not match. What I cannot explain is why the

PC
boots in safe mode--it makes no sense to me but maybe I am overlooking
something. If nobody offers an explanation here, I suggest you contact

the
maker of the new ram and ask for their help.

Try removing the new ram and see if the boot problem continues. If

not,
change the slots and install the new ram where the old one was and

the
old
one in the empty slot. Sometimes ram modules will not match and

problems
ensue; however, I don't recall hearing of that happening but not

when
in
safe mode.

Hi,
I have an IBM Aptiva 2178-840 with 128 RAM, now I tried to add

more
ram
and
bought another 128 MB. The card installs without a problem and the
system
seems to work fine, but just before the icons are placed on the

desktop
in
windows the system freezes and it is impossible to do an Alt,

Ctrl,
Del.
I
have tried to restart the system in safe mode and that works well,

it
opens
all the way and tells me that I now have 256 MB RAM, but I don't

know
where
to go from here to have it work in regular mode as well?

I did a "clean up" on the computer last night, and checked for

AD-ware
earlier today, so I don't think that is a problem.

Aina

Without the new RAM I have no boot problems. I tried to change the

slots,
but then the computer froze after giving me the first screen telling

it
is
an Apitva. I was told to press F1 to go to control ? (translation),

but
nothing happened if I tried that.

Aina
