Default Wondering about Norton crash guard...........

Anyone her used it? I know that there is a lot of Norton bashing at the mo and I do agree it causes problems but I quite fancy trying this crash guard. I'm running win 98se and I currently have norton system works 2003 but got hold of Norton Untilities 3.0 which has crash guard on it. Any ideas about installing? I'm worried it might mess up the system works I already have present which is obviously a more recent version

Don't bother. Norton's web site documents several cases where CrashGuard
takes a non-critical error and traps it, turning it into a critical error.
A properly-maintained Windows system should not be crashing - if it is you
would be better off finding out why and fixing the problem instead of
sweeping it under the rug.

It indicates problems that don't exist, and halts problems that do exist.
The typical user has no idea what's accurate. More trouble than its worth.
Don't install it. Windows tools are usually enough for everyday
maintenance. Use taskscheduler for night maintenance.

The only reason I decided to try it was that my pc on occasion freezes up and rarely but sometimes does crash. Am I not right in thinking that all pc's crash from time to time due to sloppy software, viruses etc? The pc projects magazine suggested that win 95-98se users may want to try it. I think nuts and bolts has something similar but I decided to stick with norton.

Also I find it very difficult to determine the exact cause of pc related problems not matter how many books I read. Though I have discovered that uninstalling certain things has solved any previous issues I had.

If the system is freezing up, CrashGuard will NOT help with the problem.
CrashGuard will intercept a system error, but in the case of a freeze-up
there is no error generated so no luck with CrashGuard.

Such problems are most often hardware related - a bad stick of memory, a bad
power supply, a failing or dirty cooling fan in the system, or a power
supply on its way out, these are the causes I most often see maintaining my
fleet (~300 PCs and servers) of computers.

Not unless you have bad sware or malwqare on board. The trick is to
rarely if ever see crashes, because you don't have junk or malicious
software on your PC - it's a user-applied "wuality control" thing.

Adding more software usually doesn't help. Start here instead:

http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/bthink.htm "Before you Think"

CrashGuard is utterly hopeless, unless you are bored with your
well-managed, reliable PC and have a hankerin' to go troubleshooting.

Norton Crash Guard is more accurately described as Norton Crash
Causer. Even Symantec gave up on the product and discontinued it
years ago, for good reason.

As for Nuts and Bolts, my opinion is that you would have to be nuts in
order to bolt that piece of unmitigated crapware onto your computer.
It is also off the market now, and for good reason.

If you have specific problems, try posting a question about that
problem to an appropriate newsgroup (this one, for example, for
general Windows 98 issues).

Good luck
