Default Trouble with Dragging Desktop Icons and Favourites

Hello, I have a good problem that may just stump you all.

First of all i have windows 98 the original first edition. I am also
running IE6 the recent download and fix.

My problem is that when i first book up my computer the desktop icons and
favourites and the start menu items CAN be dragged and moved with no
problems. Then after a short period of time using the Internet and doign my
usualy daily routines, the icons jand favouites etc etc.. seem to LOCK up
and refuse to be dragged anywhere. I cant organize my icons, nor my
favourites or menu items. But i CAN Resize windows.. so i know thats not
a problem!

THEN when I REBOOT everythign is working fine again for a time and then the
problem comes back again!

The AUTO ARRANGE is Unchecked.. but that wouldnt effect the Favourites list
anyways.

There is NO ADware stuff on my system as I check it all the time! there
is also no viruses either as i have the latest Virus protection!

I know i can just reboot to make it work.. but i dont like to have to reboot
ALL the time just to fix this problem .. there must be some thign causing
this.. and i appreciate any help!

Sincerely

Hello, thank you for the response.. but I was already referred to that
specific tip and page from somsone else about a week ago and found there
was nothing new running in the back ground then what i usually have been
running.. The problem just seems to come all of a sudden.

Also like i say when i DO a REBOOT anyways, the problem goes away. So it
isnt comethign that is loaded at start up.. as the problem doesnt show up
till after a short time using the internet or typing docmuents! I just hate
having to0 reboot all the time JUST to unlock everything.. The problem
seems to be in the windows explorer, as it locks icons, favourites,
explorer items.. etc etc. but does NOT effect the resizing of windows.

Thank y ou !

Leona K.

You may not have noticed anything new; however, it is still a good bet that
something running in the background is causing the problem. Try shutting
down all programs being started at boot and see if it locks up. If so, try
starting in Safe Mode and see if stuff locks up. Let us know the results.

Thank for trying .. but that does not help.. as i mentioned ealier that i did
try that before.. and nothing is any different. The problem came all of a
sudden. Like with in the last month or so. Nothing was installed and
nothing was removed. nothing has changed. Also like i say i have no
viruses and also clean of any spyware.

Also the problem is only intermittent too.. The problem IS NOT present when
i reboot.. so i wouldnt be able to tell as you say for a clean boot. cause i
can EVEN boot NORMAL and the problem is NOT there. it only comes from when
i run the internet.. or doing word pad.. and what not..... but it is
randomly intermittent.. and i cant predict when it will happen.. so it makes
it hard to to them kinda tests.. like i say i have tried.

I will have to keep track of EXACTLY what i do during my normal usage... so
that way WHEN the problem arises again... i will be able to narrow it down
some!

Is there a LOG somewhere built in windows to show what was done on the
computer during specific times?!?!?!?!? that would help!

Thank you anyways.. .. at least you tried!

Sincerely
Leona

I don't know what it is, BUT...

(1) Close all open windows; "START button, Run, DxDiag".
This is the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Could it have a message?

(2) "START, Run, MSInfo32, Tools tab, IE Repair Tool".
E & IE are closely related. However, I'm not sure it does all
that much, and some do report it crashes on their machine, apparently in
an orderly manner. It does produce a rather long "Fix IE Log.txt" in
C:\Windows. If it crashes, a reinstall of IE is indicated.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194177
Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool

(3) "START, Shut Down, Restart in MS-DOS Mode"; enter "Scanreg /fix".
The Registry is involved with nearly everything. (Won't work for a
Registry around 9 MB huge.)

Have Resource Meter run at startup (Start Programs Accessories System Tools
Resource Meter). It will place an icon in the system tray near the clock. When the
problem occurs, report what the available resources are, per the meter.

If Resource Meter is not installed, you can add it through Add\Remove Programs
Windows Setup tab.

When exactly did the problem start? Was it after installing any updates or other
software?

Have you actually tested with a clean boot, as Ron suggested, or are you just
assuming it won't show anything?

How small/large is your hard drive?
Do you regularly clean out the Temp and IE temp folders?

And when did you last...?...

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q287914
Articles about Scandisk
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q286263
Articles about Defrag

I must warn that Scandisk may not do a great job when there is a
great one to do...
http://cquirke.mvps.org/9x/scandisk.htm
Therefore, perhaps UNcheck "Automatically fix errors" on it's front
screen. It will then ask whether you want each error fixed. If it sounds
truly horrible, say "No!", and post the log. The log will be
"C:\Scandisk.log". Do not let it constantly restart, either. (When
running Scandisk in DOS, there won't be such a box to uncheck. You must
"Scandisk /Checkonly", instead. It will write to the same .log. The
Auto-Scandisk that runs from DOS after a crash must be set to "Prompt"
the bad ones in C:\Windows\Command\Scandisk.ini.) REALLY, in light of
all THAT, the BEST thing to do is to have a full system backup to run
to! Would you like my list of backup apps?

1. Turn off screen saver (R-Clk Desktop, Properties, Screen Saver--
None)
2. Turn off power management (Control Panel, Power Management-- Always
On,Never,Never,Never)
3. Disable any permanent internet cable connection, perhaps.
4. Suspend Task Scheduler
5. Turn off interfering programs. Use "StartupCop" or "EndItAll2" from
PCMag (below). Or "START, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab". Note what is
unchecked. Then, go to the General tab & disable the entire Startup
Group, by clicking "Selective.." & unchecking "Load Startup...". Reboot.
Don't forget to re-enable before the next boot.
6. Use "HDValet" from PCMag, or
(a) "Control Panel, Internet Options, Delete Files button, bolt Delete
all offline content, OK, OK"
(b) "START, Run, %TEMP%", & delete all files that will let you. This
will likely be "C:\Windows\Temp". This is best done after a fresh boot,
unless you have not seen the message "Reboot to complete this install".
7. Run Scandisk (Thorough, usually w/o write testing. Check all three
items under "Scandisk, Advanced button, 'Check files for' box". If you
want to be informed as it does a fix, UNcheck "Automatically fix errors"
on the front screen, or look inside "C:\Scandisk.log" afterwards.)
8. "START, Run, Defrag /p /details". Apparently, "/p" Defrags the
unmovables.

The purpose of steps 1-5 is only to prevent constant restarts of
Scandisk & Defrag, if you get them; but DEFINITELY turn off the Virus
Scanner. Scandisk should be done perhaps once a month, and certainly
after every serious crash. Do a Defrag after a sluggish boot or when
this says so:
http://www.pcmag.com/ 's CrackUp, by Gregory A. Wolking & Bob Flanders.
Also, take DiskAction, to determine what is constantly writing to the
HDD, which causes the restarts. Take BHOCop & StartupCop too.

"DiskAction" reports the last 12 processes that access any partition. It
discovered the Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification tool was
accessing my HDD every five minutes. It can be uninstalled in "Control
Panel, Add/Remove Programs". Then, occasionally, "START, Windows Update"
on your own.

"BHOCop" found a Browser Helper Object called Wavehelper Class, created
by "Wavetop", that was building a monstrosity of an error log called
"Logit.txt" in here. "START, Find, F/F, Logit.txt"-- see one?

Now, my hard drive is quieter than my mouse. (Of course, I now also have
384 MB RAM, up from an initial 64, eliminating Swap File activity.)

Is your "sleep" mode disabled? One of our Win98 systems after a reboot
and running nicely for a while would hang. I think it was because it
would go into some form of sleep mode and does not like to come back,
pieces of software were locking up. We solved the problem by setting
this machine to run constantly. Under the "power management" section
'Never' is checked everywhere. After that, we never had a hang while
sitting and studying things on the internet..

Also, don't know if this will help. But I was having troubles with
Internet Explorer hanging, "explorer" itself seemed to stop. The
problem went from intermittently rare to getting worse and worse.
Finally, became a regular event and so bad a hang could not even
reboot. Had to do power off to get things back. Another group pointed
out that "My Documents" should not have more than 100 files in it,
including subfolders! I already knew to keep the root directory very
bare. Less than 14 files in C:\ But My Documents folder had dutifully
accumulated nicely organized reams of files and folders. After moving
all of them to a new directory, zMy Documents and keeping only two or
three files the original My Document directories; there was no longer
any strange behavoiour when on the internet. Why? Don't know. don't
care. But now the system has not hung up for over a month where before
it was at least once a day. And always when on the internet.

PS running Win98 SE and IE 6
