Using CD-RW drive gets blue screen
I have a stand-alone PC Pentium 3, running Win98SE.
When a disk is placed in the CD-RW drive I get exactly the same blue screen error_ message, as follows: "Windows An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C1C179C7 in VxD APIX (03) + 000007E7. This was called from 0028:C1C176D9 in VxD APIX(03) + 000004F9. It may be possible to continue normally. ...." Sometimes, instead of getting the above m_essage the System "disconnects" with no error message so that one minute it was in Windows and the next it is restarting_ from DOS. The CD-RW drive is identified in Device Manager as: "SONY CD-RW CRX230ED". There are no exclamation marks in Device Manager. Any help would be appreciated. |

Try fixing your other problem (DEFRAG009) first, Gabriele. Then, if the problem
persists, post back. Probably need to clean up your device manager. How long has it been since the "Service Techs" did their thing? -- Gary S. Hello Gary,
Thanks for your response of 12/11/2004 10:58:04 PM. From their report, the techs seem to have carried out their work on or by November 25, 2004. Thanks also for your response about the Defrag issue. Well, I understand why you might be loathe to repartition/reformat the HDD and
start over again, which is why I provided the instructions I did. Still, it might be easier in the long run to start over. I also suspect that the problems you are encountering are only the tip of the iceberg, that you will keep encountering more problems thanks to the "service" provided by the techs. Still, for the drive issue, this is what I would usually recommend: Boot into Safe Mode, go into Device Manager, and remove ALL drives (floppy, hard disk, CD drives, internal Zip, whatever), and remove ALL disk controllers (FIFOs won't let themselves be removed, but don't worry about that for now), and lastly, remove the System device called "PCI Bus". While you're there, look for items that are duplicated. While it's normal for some items in the System category, and USB devices, to be duplicated, the general rule is one entry per device. Where there are duplications, remove ALL instances of that item. Also remove devices that are no longer present. For instance, if you have three monitors listed, remove all entries but the one that's correct (when in doubt, remove them all.) When you restart, most items will be reinstalled automatically. (Modems need to be reinstalled manually after restarting.) There is one small issue that often needs attention at this phase, concerning parent/child relationships. Basically, if you remove a device that is a "parent" device, you should also remove its "child" devices. If you remove a sound card entry, there will likely be related items to remove. If you remove a modem enumerator, you also need to remove the modem itself and the "Wave Device for Modem". If you remove an LPT port, it's also wise to remove the printer attached to it...Etcetera. Make a list of any duplicated items you remove and post back. We'll be able to tell you if anything else might need to be reinstalled as a result. When you've finished cleaning up the Device Manager list in Safe Mode, restart and let Windows reinstall the devices. I wish you luck, and I hope that you can resolve your issues without completely wiping the hard drive and starting over. But I must also suggest, again, that there may simply be too many problems due to the "service" that was provided, and the wiser move at this point might be to start over. -- Gary S.
