Networking 98 SE with XP Pro
Hi,
I have an old Pentium II laptop with 94MB Ram running on W98 SE, which I only use because its dock station is SCSI and connected to my flat and my slide scanners. I would like to network it with my PC with XP Pro SP2 so I could monitor the scanners from the PC. Is it possible and if so, would someone tell me how to do it? Thanks for your help Pascal |

Unless you have a third party application I don't know how you plan on monitoring
since you don't mention. Otherwise for setting up a network you have a few choices, the best would be to purchase a 4 Port Nat router which only costs approx $60.00 U.S. For good info on setting up a network: www.wown.com http://www.practicallynetworked.com/ http://www.homepcnetwork.com/ -- Brian A. I should probably not have posted here and should have looked more closely at
the 98 networking section. So first i will try what is suggested by Steve and Jim in the thread with Moonraker "Pascal" wrote: Hi, I have an old Pentium II laptop with 94MB Ram running on W98 SE, which I only use because its dock station is SCSI and connected to my flat and my slide scanners. Anyway, I transfer files between different computers running with W98SE/W2000pro/WXPro all the time, and do it through the network via a Router which not only serves well for that - but also an excellent NAT firewall to the outside world as well. Thank you Brian and Rick for your replies,
I should have mentioned that I have a D-link DI624 wireless router. it works but seems to slow down my internet connection compared to a direct connection to the dsl modem. The thread i was mentioning is indeed in the networking section. After reading it seems to focus on the internet sharing which I am not interested in. I do not need the laptop to connect to the internet but just with the PC. Do you have any idea how I should proceed. these computers used to be connected to a network. Is there a procedure to check what I still have in terms of network in order to do clean installation of the network or can I just run the wizard as explained in the networking section? Brian, what do you mean by third party application? Thanks again for your help Pascal "Rick Chauvin" wrote: "Pascal" wrote in message I should probably not have posted here and should have looked more closely at the 98 networking section. You should be able to just run the wizard, but if you want to clean things
first simply remove the network components one by one. Networking machines together does not automatically give you the ability to share resources. File and printer sharing enables you to share file storage and printers, but sharing other devices, such as a scanner, requires third party software, if it's doable at all. So you will not get the ability to 'monitor' scanning just by networking the machines. Whether or not you can do what you want depends on just what you mean by 'monitoring', the capabilities of your scanning software, and what's available to share a scanner. If you are trying to 'monitor' the creation of image files in the folder that they are being scanned to, then file sharing will enable that. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Pascal" wrote in message ... Brian, what do you mean by third party application? Thanks again for your help Pascal I see you conversation over in the networking group via the MS forums for O/OE users: news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...n98.networking ...under ----- Original Message ----- From: "Moonraker" Newsgroups: microsoft.public.win98.networking Sent: Wednesday, November 01, 2006 2:32 PM Subject: network setup wizard Or listed at Google's cache: http://groups.google.com/group/micro...3c94d80a28e6fd Anyway, at the other post your first reply has some excellent links for reference from Steve Winograd MVP's website with instructions and screenshots, also with the other posts links, and so is all a valuable source how to network the two together. You have so much conversation going I'm not sure now what you're asking anymore since you do say in the other thread that they are connected but you haven't tried sharing files with it. Anyway back to this OP here, after you get the network setup to see one another, then to your question here about you saying you want to monitor/work the scanners from one computer through to the other, which I doubt you can 'stock' setup to work programs/scanners from your wxp box through while via being just installed on your w98 box (if that's what you want?) ...however, one thing for sure that's possible is that you would do your work with the scanners on the 98 pc that it's installed to, and then copy the end result image files to your wxp computer and do what you want with it there; otherwise since you say that you only use your 98 pc because its dock station is SCSI and connected to your flat and your slide scanners then you would find a way to install that setup specifically to your wxp box if it can/can't be done? ..otherwise if not then back to the dual operation of just transferring the finished work done on 98 to your xp pc afterwards to do what you want with..
