Default Media preview...Unanswerable question?

I've got a rather unusual question and I don't know if anyone can help me
here.

I'm using Windows 98 SE and I have enabled media preview in Windows Explorer
by editing the text in C:\WINDOWS\WEB\FOLDER.HTT. I really like this feature
because I can simply use Windows Explorer to navigate to any folder on my
computer and simply select an MP3 file and a mini media player shows in the
web content section of the folder. From there I can play the MP3 file
without opening Windows Media Player.

Recently, I found an unofficial patch for Windows 98 SE on the internet
called Windows 98 Revolutions Pack 4. It transforms the old boring Windows
98 look to feel like the newer 2000 and XP look. I like the new look, but in
the process of applying the patch, I lost my media preview. The folders now
look like Windows 2000 (actually the C:\WINDOWS\WEB folder has the same files
as the Windows 2000 folder does). I tried to replace the WEB folder with the
old Windows 98 WEB folder thinking that I might see my media previews again,
but no luck.

I guess my question is, does anyone know how I might get this media preview
back? How is it enabled on Windows 2000? (Sorry for asking this question
here, but I could not find a Windows 2000 forum on this site).

A bit of information: The Windows 98 Revolutions Pack 4 uses KernelXP, 32
bit icons, it changes the title bar to look like XP's title bar, changes the
start button to look 'sort of like' the XP start button, and the browser
buttons to look like XP, so there are definately some XP files somewhere on
my system. There are also Windows 2000 files on my system (Like the WEB
folder). Is there a registry entry that can be made to enable the media
preview in Windows Explorer?

I don't know if anyone can help. If so, great! If not, well I just won't
hold my breath! Thanks in advance!

You are XP-irradiated now. Still, what happens with...?...

"Explorer, View menu, Explorer Bar, Media". It seems to have a little icon to undock it, even. But I don't have an .MP3 file to try it with.

"Still, what happens with...?..." What do you mean by this?

Anyway, thanks for the help, but unfortunately that's not what I'm looking
for. The media sidebar you were referring to is internet explorer related.
It does not play local files on the HD. I think I may be out of luck on this
one. But thanks anyway!

Default Media preview...Unanswerable question?

A working link to the patch applied might help unravel a thing or two.
And a hint at what editing was done to C:\WINDOWS\WEB\FOLDER.HTT file
as well?

I was afraid of that, & the URLs it tries to go to aren't there, either! Sorry. I wasn't aware Folder.htt could do what you say it did, BUT it does appear to be powerful. What modifications did you put into it, me 'n Lee want to know-- but especially him! Here is all I currently know about it...

Here are two articles dug up by Glee from another thread.

Customizing a Folder's Web View:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en...asp?frame=true

Customizing Folders with Desktop.ini
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...ing/custom.asp

And here is all I know about it, until I go study those articles myself...

Acc. to "Windows 98 Secrets" (Livingston/Straub), p. 172, a Desktop.ini
is a system file created when you "View, Customize" a folder, possibly
along with a modified copy of folder.htt (HTML template). Click one and
it will open in Notepad; they are not all the same inside. Supposedly,
the ini & the htt will be deleted when you remove the customization;
that doesn't quite appear to be true, but the ini is cleared of most
data. I appear to have 23 Desktop.ini's currently, as "Find, F&F,
Desktop.ini" shows. As far as the htt, I never did see one inside a
folder, using Explorer. I saw 17 of them BOTH before and after removing
a customization, however, using "Find, F&F, *.htt". (Update: I think I see
those .htt's after setting:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced
ShowSuperHidden 0x00000001 (1) --DWORD: 1.)

Acc. to "Windows 98 Secrets" (Livingston/Straub), p. 199, special
folders can also contain a Desktop.ini which "may have a reference to a
dynamic link library (dll) file that defines a specific set of behaviors
for the folder".

There are other ways to create them, and they are sometimes involved in
copy protection schemes. Also third party programs, such as
http://www.pcmag.com/ 's Folders creates or modifies them to store
pointers to the folder icons. I have such pointers in some
desktop.ini's, although I never did install "Folders".

Default Media preview...Unanswerable question?

Poatt...I think I agree with you! The only reason I first applied this patch
is because of the nice modern look. I also like the extra options I get when
right-clicking on a file (such as "OPEN WITH...") OPEN WITH is not available
on Windows 98 ULNLESS the file is NOT associated with a program. With this
patch I downloaded, OPEN WITH is available for ALL files (because let's face
it, sometimes the default program isn't always what you want to use.)

For the most part, the the patch is very nice and works great! I have
shading on my menus, I can make the text labels on my desktop icons
transparent, and I have the ability to customize my toolbar in Windows
Explorer. The only thing I'm missing is my media preview. There MUST be a
registry setting to enable this!

As for your request, PCR...the link to the patch is
http://birdnest.sasktelwebsite.net/RP4.zip This is my webspace...I just
copied the file there. And the text editing I did in FOLDER.HTT was near the
top where it says VAR WANT MEDIA = FALSE I changed the FALSE to TRUE and I
added a few file types near the end of the file's text. I may have to give
up cosmetics for convenience!

Sorry, Lee...YOU were the one asking about the working link to the update and
the specific line changes made to FOLDER.HTT. My mistake in the previouse
post. I also want to add that this unofficial patch has a back-up option so
that you can revert back to your old system!
