Default Internet Connection Problem even after virus removal

I am helping a friend who was having problems connecting
to the internet which runs Windows ME. I noticed the new
virus alerts so I installed a newer version of Antivirus
software because hers was obsolete. It found numerous
Adware viruses which it removed and the w32/Klez.eml
virus which it couldn't delete it. I then scanned it with
a few other tools I found on the internet and all didn't
find the virus ever again.

The computer still won't connect to the internet via a
LAN. It does see my router and it is getting assigned an
IP address from it. But when I try to go to www.msn.com
it gives the generic message that it couldn't find the
server or connect. It also adds strange characters to the
URL which it then displays as http:///?%20www.msn.com

I have am lost now and don't know what to do.
