Default Unexpected "CLOSE" button

Without notice and while working in different
applications, a pop-up panel with a CLOSE button appears
in center of screen. There are no options other than hit
the button, shutdown and restart computer. What might be
causing this and what might be a remedy?

If there is just a close button and nothing else, try a ctrl-alt-del
to bring up End Task.
Never heard of just a 'Close' button by itself.
Perhaps spyware, virus, or one of the over 10000000000000000+ things I
haven't heard of yet?
