Default unable to enter name + serial (keyboard.drv doesn't initialize)

Anyone know of where I can't get an updated or replacement of keyboard.drv
that will work with my Windows 98 SE 4.10.2222?

I can't load any regular windows drivers or anything because "I have to enter
a name to use Windows"

In my bootlog.txt it shows successful loading of KEYBOARD.DRV, but it fails
to initialize. I have tried adding several different drivers to the
config.sys, I found keyboard.sys and keybrd2 - keybrd4, all of these cause a
hang at their loading. I noticed that vmmouse.vxd is loaded but a
keyboard.vxd doesn't seem to even be required because a search online didn't
really return anything.

Removing keyboard.drv didn't help, it caused my to not even get to the
screen where it asks for a name. My next plan of action is to find a
replacement keyboard.drv online somewhere, and if that doesn't work then I'm
going to remove all non-essential hardware and do a bare bones attempt
(thinking there could be a conflict between the keyboard.drv and something
else in my system).

I couldn't find anyone else who's ever had this problem after hours of
searching (probably because most don't have multi-OS)

Is there a way to bypass the need for name entering perhaps?
Also is there a way to do safe-mode? (doesn't appear possible until you've
run Windows at least once and entered your name + serial)

When you say that it asks for a name, do you mean the Windows logon screen?
If so, click the cancel button to bypass the screen. Once booted, do a find
on *.pwl and rename the one you find by changing the extension to: .pwb
That should allow you on a subsequent boot to enter a user name and a
password in the logon screen. Should you not want a logon screen, you can
enter a user name and a blank password.

Blank Password: Go to control panel, network, primary network logon and
select Windows Logon. Go to control panel, passwords, user profiles and
ensure the "all user's" box is marked. If you have a password established,
go to control panel, passwords, change windows password, type the password
in the old box, leave the rest blank and OK your way out. If you have
forgotten your password, delete the .pwl file with your user name (mine is
ron.pwl); however, be aware that you will lose all passwords stored in the
..pwl file. If you do not have a password established or have deleted the
..pwl file, when the W95/98 logon screen appears at boot, type a user name
only and hit OK. If the logon screen continues to appear and you have Tweak
UI installed, go to the Paranoia tab and remove the mark from "clear last
user."

Now that you have fooled with your config.sys file, rename it to:
config.bak as this file is not required by Windows to boot.

If I have guessed wrong on what you mean, please post back with more
details.

Nonono, sorry you went through all that trouble. I figured you would know I
meant the first startup screen since I was unable to enter the serial as
well. It is the screen where M$ ask you for the name of the person who will
be using this computer and demands you follow orders like a good consumer
whore, or you won't be allowed to use the software you purchased from them.
Its a bit hard to answer this demand with a keyboard driver that doesn't work
and no implemented functionality for installing one.

If I mess with the driver files it fails to load (presumably for security
against piracy, probably also the same reason why safe-mode isn't allowed to
be used yet)

Do you mean you are doing an install of W98 and cannot enter the product key
or the name of the owner? If so, the first thing I'd do is make sure the
keyboard works properly on another PC. There should not be anything special
in the way of drivers required--the keyboard should work if the hardware is
good.

Unfortunately SHOULD and DOES don't always align for people with computer
problems. Not only do both of my keyboards work on other computers, they
work on the same computer (I also use Windows XP). And before you get any
ideas, I started from a complete wipe, so I know there is no conflict between
the 2 OS's. I'll probably just use Wine to run the program I needed to use
that doesn't work with the NT5 kernel. Now I just have to figure out how to
use Linux -_- By the way are there any programs for XP that will emulate
the 98 kernel? Like from safe-mode or something?

Do you know about XP's compatibility mode? Right click a shortcut
(sometimes the program's execute file), properties and compatibility tab.

I'll give it a shot, but there are many threads about this particular
programs inability to function in XP. If it were as simple as a right click
and execute it in a different way, I think they'd know. It tries to access
the hardware directly (which the XP kernel doesn't allow), and supposedly it
did so through a bug in a CDROM device manager or something that is now
fixed. (Its Bleem!, a Playstation emulator by the way)

then
I'm
going to remove all non-essential hardware and do a bare bones
attempt
(thinking there could be a conflict between the keyboard.drv and
something
else in my system).

I couldn't find anyone else who's ever had this problem after hours
of
searching (probably because most don't have multi-OS)

Is there a way to bypass the need for name entering perhaps?
Also is there a way to do safe-mode? (doesn't appear possible until
you've
run Windows at least once and entered your name + serial)

Nope, still says

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\k\bleem!.exe
---------------------------
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\k\bleem!.exe is not a valid
Win32 application.

OK

And I never did get that Win98 installation to work, but I've turned my
attentions elsewhere anyway.

Unfortunately SHOULD and DOES don't always align for people with computer
problems. Not only do both of my keyboards work on other computers, they
work on the same computer (I also use Windows XP). And before you get
any
ideas, I started from a complete wipe, so I know there is no conflict
between
the 2 OS's. I'll probably just use Wine to run the program I needed to use
that doesn't work with the NT5 kernel. Now I just have to figure out how
to
use Linux -_- By the way are there any programs for XP that will emulate
the 98 kernel? Like from safe-mode or something?

Do you mean you are doing an install of W98 and cannot enter the product
key
or the name of the owner? If so, the first thing I'd do is make sure the
keyboard works properly on another PC. There should not be anything
special
in the way of drivers required--the keyboard should work if the hardware
is
good.

Nonono, sorry you went through all that trouble. I figured you would
know
I
meant the first startup screen since I was unable to enter the serial
as
well. It is the screen where M$ ask you for the name of the person who
will
be using this computer and demands you follow orders like a good
consumer
whore, or you won't be allowed to use the software you purchased from
them.
Its a bit hard to answer this demand with a keyboard driver that
doesn't
work
and no implemented functionality for installing one.

If I mess with the driver files it fails to load (presumably for
security
against piracy, probably also the same reason why safe-mode isn't
allowed
to
be used yet)

When you say that it asks for a name, do you mean the Windows logon
screen?
If so, click the cancel button to bypass the screen. Once booted, do
a
find
on *.pwl and rename the one you find by changing the extension to:
.pwb
That should allow you on a subsequent boot to enter a user name and a
password in the logon screen. Should you not want a logon screen, you
can
enter a user name and a blank password.

Blank Password: Go to control panel, network, primary network logon
and
select Windows Logon. Go to control panel, passwords, user profiles
and
ensure the "all user's" box is marked. If you have a password
established,
go to control panel, passwords, change windows password, type the
password
in the old box, leave the rest blank and OK your way out. If you have
forgotten your password, delete the .pwl file with your user name
(mine
is
ron.pwl); however, be aware that you will lose all passwords stored in
the
..pwl file. If you do not have a password established or have deleted
the
..pwl file, when the W95/98 logon screen appears at boot, type a user
name
only and hit OK. If the logon screen continues to appear and you have
Tweak
UI installed, go to the Paranoia tab and remove the mark from "clear
last
user."

Now that you have fooled with your config.sys file, rename it to:
config.bak as this file is not required by Windows to boot.

If I have guessed wrong on what you mean, please post back with more
details.

Anyone know of where I can't get an updated or replacement of
keyboard.drv
that will work with my Windows 98 SE 4.10.2222?

I can't load any regular windows drivers or anything because "I have
to
enter
a name to use Windows"

In my bootlog.txt it shows successful loading of KEYBOARD.DRV, but
it
fails
to initialize. I have tried adding several different drivers to the
config.sys, I found keyboard.sys and keybrd2 - keybrd4, all of these
cause
a
hang at their loading. I noticed that vmmouse.vxd is loaded but a
keyboard.vxd doesn't seem to even be required because a search
online
didn't
really return anything.

Removing keyboard.drv didn't help, it caused my to not even get to
the
screen where it asks for a name. My next plan of action is to find
a
replacement keyboard.drv online somewhere, and if that doesn't work
then
I'm
going to remove all non-essential hardware and do a bare bones
attempt
(thinking there could be a conflict between the keyboard.drv and
