Default Can't Install 98SE

My friend had Win98 SE. He had a problem and so formatted the PC. Now
whenever he tries to Install, the PC hangs up somewhere after or before the
scandisk that 98 setup performs before installation. Even if he is able to
reach the SETUP wizard, the system locks up unexpectedly or sives an error in
setup module file (something like that-- it's not setup.exe). I even tried
'fdisk' but no luck. Moreover some times I get an error during scandisk that:
An error occured, problem found on the drive, incorrect argument division by
0 (zero)&nsb failed.

Any help/ suggestions! Is his HDD gone? Tried changing RAM.

You may indeed have a bad HD (that's a good indication if Scandisk is
reporting errors) however for the following advice "your mileage may vary".
I've had difficulty similar to yours on more than one occasion when
installing from an 'older CD'. Win98 CDs are probably on the order of 7+
years old - potential for lots of handling. When having difficulty
installing, upon examination of the CD indeed I've often found it dirty
(smudges) and sometimes with some minor scratches. Cleaning the CD is a
must. Sometimes using another CDROM helps fix the problem (CDROM is usually
old too) but more often putting the install files on the HD and installing
from the HD fixes the problem.

Ya you are right but I tried installing by copying the files to the Local
Disk. I reached the setup part where it starts the wizard but later an error
poped up can't find D:\Win98 (i.e. the folder I copied the files to).

I suggest you visit the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download
their drive check utility.

Typically, it will generate a bootable floppy that will check the drive
