Default New SDRAM not recognised

I am having to advise a friend by phone on how to get his new 256mb ram chip
recognised in Windows 98.
He says that the initial boot up check shows that the new 256mb of ram is
present, but when he looks at the configuration in Windows it says thst only
128mb is present.
The chip is SDRAM type.
He has 3 ram slots and has added the new ram to the third slot. The other 2
slots have 64mb in each.
I am not fully conversant with 98 so perhaps there is something that needs
to be done to get the ram chip working.
Can anyone help?
Thank you
