Win98 can't access XP home edition
I have an HP Pavilion running win98 and a Dell Dimension running XP home
edition. Both are connected via Linksys Ethernet Network. I have no problem viewing or accessing files from the HP to the Dell (which is designate as the master), on the HP I can see the Dell on the network along with the HP. However, if I try to access the Dell from the HP I get that tired message: \\Dell is not accessible No Permission to Access Resource Now, I do not have any firewalls or virus protection on either machine, they both contain the same workgroup name, files/folders have been assigned as shared and I can connect to the internet from both computers. What Now???? Thanks for any help you may be able to provide. Leilani |

Leilani create a user account on the Dell that uses the same logon and password as the win98 machine uses Matching user accounts shouldn't be needed to access XP Home over a network. They're only needed to access XP Pro, and only if you've explicitly disabled simple file sharing. Simple file sharing is always enabled in XP Home. Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP Home (and not on Win98, even though the Wizard tells you to). That often fixes permission problems. If it doesn't, make sure that XP Home's Guest account is enabled for network access and that it doesn't have a network password: 1. Click Start | Run, type "cmd" in the box, and click OK. 2. Type this command and press Enter: net user guest /active:yes 3. Type this command and press Enter: control userpasswords2 4. Click Guest. 5. Click Reset Password. 6. Click OK without entering a new password. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see.
