Help, something changed the dates on my files !!!
Today, on the Win98 machine, several files suddenly had their modified
and created dates changes to December 5, 2009 !! Some files created in 2007 had their modified date changed to December 3, 2009 Today after much problems I discovered my calendar set to December 5, 2009, although I did not change it. How do I change them back to the appropriate dates? The changes span over several folders, too. I don't even know how to look for all the damage to undo it. I would normally ignore and just let the calendar 'catch up', but these folders are synchronized in four locations using xcopy and the most recent date stamp. I don't dare allow these files marked with weird dates to corrupt the updating processes. help! Robert |

A Created Date is the date a file shows up in a folder. Those can be the same date, if a file is created for the first time in a folder & is never modified after that. If later modified, Modified Date will be higher than Created Date. But most original system files were last modified on 04-23-1999 & moved to your folder later. Those have a higher Created Date. To get Created Date to be the current date, move it out & then back in to its current folder. I'm not sure whether Windows will just give an error message, though, if it sees the Created Dated to be later than the current date. If so, run ScanDisk first. That will set Created Date to 01-01-1980. To get Modified Date to be the current date, run ScanDisk. Be sure to set your system date to the current date first. Also, click the Advanced button & ensure ScanDisk is set to fix the dates. Some files created in 2007 had their modified date changed to December 3, 2009 So, some Created Dates remained the same while the Modified Date changed & others did not? Files already present retain the original Created Date while getting a new Modified date. Other files created for the first time will have the same date for both, until they are modified again. Then, the Modified Date is higher. Today after much problems I discovered my calendar set to December 5, 2009, although I did not change it. I presume you mean the system date. Have you clicked the clock in the Tray yet & changed it back? How do I change them back to the appropriate dates? The changes span over several folders, too. I don't even know how to look for all the damage to undo it. ScanDisk will go through all the folders. Here is a sample of what it can do from my ScanDisk.log... The C:\Program Files\NetZero\images folder contained incorrect information about nz_plt_search_text.gif (MS-DOS name NZ_PLT~1.GIF): The last-modified date or time for the file or folder was invalid. Resolution: Repair the error Results: Error was corrected as specified above. I remember getting asked whether to make the change. Too bad it doesn't show the actual dates it changed. I would normally ignore and just let the calendar 'catch up', but these folders are synchronized in four locations using xcopy and the most recent date stamp. If you don't know which files are affected and what their correct dates
should be, I can't see how you can fix it. You can search for files by date using the W98 Find function and the Date option. You could move all files with a wrong date to a special location where they would be insulated from the synchronizing, then deal with each one as appropriate. It is possible to set the date for any file. See, for instance: http://www.download3000.com/download_47348.html -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Robert A. Macy" wrote in message ... As suggested, do a Find/search for the files with the specific date changes. As for changing the dates back or whatever, I used an app called Properties Plus from PCMag [I think it was anyway]. It can change the dates of files to ANY date, both for creation and modification. -- ~ -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org/ref/windows-main.htm Windows Diagnostics, Security, Networking http://peoplescounsel.org The *REAL WORLD* of Law, Justice, and Government _______ |

Sounds like you system battery needs to be replaced. *It's inside the computer. *You will lose all bios settings when you change it, although there are two ways to avoid that. *Change is extremely fast so the capacitirs dont discharge, or leave the computer turned on and be careful not to drop it on the motherboard and short out something. Thank you all for answering. Upon very close inspection, it appears the calendar was changed and all files starting June 3 in the afternoon, suddenly everything's dates were bumped up to December 3, etc. In other words, could have been operator error [at least I hope] With that in mind I found three programs recommended FileDate Changer SetFileDate 2.0 Express Timestamp Toucher After downloading SetFileDate 2.0 approx 560kB installed and ran. The interface was great, even stored all old settings making it easier to go through each file to change the date, but preserve the time of day. Plus, can select any of three attributes for the date to change: create, modify, access. Took less than 1/2 hour to go through all the damage, and still preserve the time of day on the files. I'm not sure how a file/folder created in 2007 got changed, but I simply purged that section and recopied it with the correct dates from an original section. Just a footnote: I downloaded the WinTouch program mentioned above and after completion of the download, IE? hung so badly had to reboot. Not sure that relates to the download, but more and more my IE gets hung at the drop of a hat. I'll keep watch on this date changing to see if it was me, or the PC acting up. Regarding changing the Li battery, if the system is plugged in all the time the battery is not necessary, right? Robert |

It's unlikely that your problem was associated with a bad backup battery.
The symptom for that sort of fault is that the date is reset to an old date (not forward) and that it happens at boot time (not while the machine is running).. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Robert Macy" wrote in message ...
