Reason for "OTHER THAN" is that IE will not download the setupex
file from
trendmicro. It gets to about 5% and stops.

Netscape would download it but not WIN would not run the

"setupex"
program
past extracting files -- said it could not find the Netscape
directory
(which I pointed it to) and then said it could not find the

plugins
directory under Netscape. (which is there, albeit empty)

Google coughs up numerous 'free scan' sites -- but who to trust?

My IE internet settings for Internet Zone -- where trendmicro

shows
up in
the lower right of IE 5.0 window -- having to do with ActiveX:

Download signed ActiveX controls
o Prompt

Download unsigned ActiveX controls
o Prompt

Initialize and run activeX controls not marked as safe
o Prompt

Run ActiveX controls and plugins
o Enable

Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting
o Enable

For IE, It is unsigned and I answered yes to the prompt to

install
and run
and chose c:\install for a directory. Did not work. :-)

Nope. Huge download, over 50k files checked ..... 0 infected.
I did note that Symantec did not check within archives (zips) -- and the
info screen said as much -- since I have held a trojan containing zip file
just to be sure that the online AV was working. (Trendmicro always finds it.
:-))

I guess every coupla months I decide that something must be wrong.
I used to run the trendmicro but since it would not today, i immediately
decided that I must have a real mcnasty stopping it. G

I had run Spybot S&D and AdAware.

Yesterday I had really slow internet response, but a decent dial-up
connection speed and I checked the connections and had more than I could
account for(about 6 or 7). But all but two were numeric IPs -- no domain
names. The 2 domain names were valid for what i was doing.

(Does port 19999 mean anything in particular?)

Only thing that has changed in my system since I last ran Trendmicro was
that I updated WIN98 SE for the first time with the microsoft updates -- I
downloaded and the system applied 9 out of 11, IIRC.
One that I did not get was ActiveX 9.0.

Hey, you know this all used to be a lot simpler!

Did you mean Direct X 9 instead of ActiveX9.0?

Try the Kaspersky and Panda ones if you have the time.

There are other programs available to check for trojans and dialers
specifically.

Do you use a software firewall such as the free ZA ?
Will TrendMicro work now?

There are some free anti-virus programs that seem to work according to
people posting in the anti-virus ngs.
Two of them are Avast and AVG.
Hopefully someone else will respond about your ports and your IE
settings (which look OK to me even though I put Disable for
"Initialize and run activeX controls not marked as safe" but 'Prompt'
lets you choose).
PS: Consider upgrading IE to the latest version.

If it is "Direct X 9.0" available from Microsoft then I am sure that is it.
That and one other I saw as unnecessary.

I do not have a firewall. I have not tried Trendmicro again. I originally
tried it several times...disabling Spyguard, rebooting, etc., "just in
case".

My experience with IE 6.0 was much less than good -- no doubt that of others
will differ. I believe that Trendmicro asks for 4.7 or better.

OH!

I would prefer to keep critical updates always up to date and never update a

great caution.

Only thing that has changed in my system since I last ran Trendmicro

was
that I updated WIN98 SE for the first time with the microsoft

updates -- I
downloaded and the system applied 9 out of 11, IIRC.
One that I did not get was ActiveX 9.0.

Hey, you know this all used to be a lot simpler!
