Default Viruses in html code in an email with school computers

Apparently, the principal of the school warned everyone during the
announcements to be wary of opening an email that had a virus embedded
within the html code. I wrote a small note to the principal since she
was busy about having all the email accounts set to plain text reading
by default and making sure all html code is blocked. I also wrote a
warning about attachments. Are there any other security protocols that
I should suggest in your opinion. Thanks in advance!

1)shut down all computers, introduce pens and paper
2)check the size of the note you wrote,
3)go out for coffee
4)join the army
5)consult a clair-voyeur
6)ask the virus writer to 'not send'
7)buy a piece of candy
8)immigrate (preferably to.....)(cannnaadaaaa)
9)ask 'gary' (you have the mail addy)
10)sit under a pyramid
11)kill all males under 97
12)watch telly
14)book a room on the 13th floor
15)ask pcr, ti's time for a chuckle
16)speak to timothy o'leary
17)bible..........?????
18)ask students to forgive your inabilites
19)take the case to judge judy
20)change your under-where
21)Dont send computer mails to principal, I'm sure she knows.
22)quit your job, allow students to grow.
23)change your sox
24)vote
25)join Hells Angels, just dont scare them too much.
But last and not least, phone microsoft and ask them, I'm sure they
are 'dying' to hear your voice. ( again)
(and if they are not dead when you call, they will be after.)
Dan, Oh Dan.

That's certainly a good start, but I would suspect the average
student will be able to change his/her settings since many WANT
to see the porn spam and many WILL click on it. Others will just
go where it is to begin with.

Changing from IE/OE to a less "virus friendly" browser like
Opera might help. A simple stand alone mail client would be
best, but those don't work with web-mail. Plus you would
probably encounter fairly violent opposition to the mere
suggestion. After all, only MS products are safe and good, as
everybody knows.

I don't know if these machines are on the network, but even
then, AFAIK, only XP, not 98, allows admin. privileges, and even
then I kind of doubt those include the setting of "text only
email". What will the poor kids do without their animated
smileys anyway |-( ?

I think any public setting is a pretty much a hopeless case. You
will probably have to set up the machines to run Spybot and a
complete virus check each and every night after everybody's gone
and then check them 1st thing in the morning. Or once a week. Or
just live with it.

Anyway, if a kid is stupid enough to subscribe to a porno site
or to buy things with his/her (HOPEFULLY) credit card on a
school computer, well...

Well, just substitute "teacher/staff member" for "student/kid"
in the above (bigger smile).

Have her find a way to restrict access to porn sites & such that came
quickly into thanatoid's head (sentence one!), with a good firewall...

Suggested to me by Dundat, this little app is the cat's meow of
Firewalls. Well, it's the only I've ever tried, but it seems to have it
all & hasn't crashed yet. Free for personal use.

That also is it.

Thanks for your input, PCR. BTW, I will be trying Vista RC1 and plan on
setting up a separate and hidden partition on the XP hard drive. Can
you or anyone else suggest a good partition program. I do not mind
spending some money but would prefer if it was $50 or less.

Many an MVP & others use BootItNG...

http://www.bootitng.com/ 's BootIt NG, has a variety of backup
capabilities: Copy to HDD, or Image to HDD or to CD/DVD. Shrink/expand
your partitions without data loss. And it will multi-boot. Free, run
from floppy, but pay up as I did if satisfied. You can't multi-boot from
floppy. To install & use beyond 30 days, $34.95.

However, take a quick look in the BootIt NG docs for an explanation of
"CHS Alternative". I'm not sure I fully understand it-- perhaps someone
else may say-- but, I believe you should select the alternative, if you
ever intend to use another party's partitioning tools on that HDD, such
as PQ, whatever.

........Start.........
CHS Alternative: If this option is enabled then the CHS values for
partitions and volumes will be filled in using an alternative method.
........End..........

I only run BootIt NG from the floppy. It has never failed me, in what I
do with it. I'm running on a partition that has been to HD1 & back and
shrunk. Here is how to run it from floppy...

(1) Download it: BootItNG.zip
(2) Unzip it; read the .pdf
(3) Click BOOTITNG.EXE to create a floppy
(4) Boot the floppy, which puts up an "Install" requester
(5) Click to cancel the install
(6) You are now in Maintenance Mode, running off the floppy
(7) Click the Settings icon to check out the "Aternative CHS" setting.
(8) Click the "Work with Partitions" icon to examine them.

BEST read that manual before doing much at steps (7) & (8)!
