Default Deleting drive letter

After running fdisk /mbr, my HDD booted normally. But I suddenly have a "D"
drive showing in "My Computer".
The contents is exactly that of "C", and the capacity used and free is also
identical with "C".
I downloaded a few music files saved them on "C", they immediately also show
up on "D".

I ran fdisk but I did not see the "D" drive at all.
How can I delete this drive?
Thanks,
AJS

Default Deleting drive letter

The problem comes up now/then at this site.

(1) "START button, Find, F/F, Autorun.inf".
I guess one of those can do it, if in a root directory, such as
"C:\" or "D:\". You should have none in a root directory.

(2) Some drivers can do it, purposely. Did you install something big
lately?

(3) "START button, Run, SysEdit". Is there a "SUBST" command in
Autoexec.bat? That would do it.

(4) Did you create a CVF (Compressed Volume File)? That would do it.

(5) "START button, Run, MSInfo32". Use CTRL-Mouse to highlight relevant
info & the Edit menu to Copy it...

Windows-managed swap file on drive C (6458MB free)
Available space on drive C: 6458MB of 7979MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive D: 6232MB of 7979MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive E: 773MB of 2792MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive F: 7979MB of 7979MB (FAT32)

Available space on drive H: 7620MB of 7979MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive I: 6174MB of 6174MB (FAT32)

(a) "START button, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt"
(b) FDISK /Status
(c) Use the "MARK", outline text with mouse, "COPY" button to post the
results.

I really don't know what that all means.
But thanks anyway
AJS

It 'means', pcr was giving you instructions on how to go about looking
into your problem.
His first instruction was for you to:
1)'press' the 'start' button, scroll up to 'Find files and folders', then
type
in "Autorun.inf"; then let the computer look around to see if 'that' file
is found, and 'if' found, where 'it' found it.

His next instruction/advice was to:
2)Ask you if you had installed a large program/file/gizmo or whatever
lately?

His next bit of advice was to ask you to::
3)Go to the 'start button', then scroll up to RUN, then type in SysEdit....
then hit 'enter'. from here he is asking if you see 'SUBST' in your
Autoexec.bat file?

and so on and so on and so on.....

he is trying to help you, listen to him and follow his instructrions.

Default Deleting drive letter

On Tue, 5 Dec 2006 12:13:36 -0800, "AJS" put
finger to keyboard and composed:

Hi, here my results

(5)

Windows-managed swap file on drive C (27017MB free)
Available space on drive C: 27017MB of 76297MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive D: 27509MB of 76297MB (FAT32)

I don't know why you have a ghost disc (I sometimes have a similar
ghosting problem with my flash drive), but I suspect that the 500MB
difference in free space may be related to the swap file, WIN386.SWP.

I think you may need the latest Fdisk.

Yea, that's right. Thanks for the support. So... this means... let's
say... 62% of the blame is yours now- if he gets worse after this!

No need for thanks, logic was the key to the lock.
As for 62%, you are showing fear, not a good quality...
we are only asking the lad to 'look at' things, not dismantle
them.

It looks like you need the updated FDISK, which would get the reported
size of partitions right...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=263044

But I never heard the original one would omit a partition altogether, I
don't think— unless it were an NTFS partition, maybe. But I do believe
Windows 98 wouldn't see it, either, in that case. But it does. So, it
looks like something about Windows is seeing a partition that doesn't
physically exist. It likely is a logical construct. But I can only guess
at what is constructing it.

| (2) Did not install anything

Now I see this is the HDD you put into a USB enclosure of an XP machine
in a nearby thread, in order to copy files from it. But you canceled the
process when it asked to format the HDD. Also, you did an FDISK /MBR, in
order to boot the HDD after you moved it back to the Win98 machine.

I really don't know what's up, but...

(1) Is it also in a USB enclosure on the Win98 machine?
I don't know, maybe it creates a second letter.

(2) Did you have a drive overlay on the hard drive?

/MBR made it inactive, but did it have this side effect? Is
something more needed to remove it entirely? Obviously, you do not need
to restore the overlay, because its full size does show in Windows
without it— but twice?

(3) How did you cancel that process on the XP machine?
Did it have a CANCEL button or did you crash it? Maybe it did some
prep work that needed to be undone. I don't know.

No, it is not in an enclosure. I reinstalled the HDD into the computer.

I turned off the Win XP computer and then disconnected the drive.

Another thing I noticed is that if I delete a file, the recycle bin will
show that file twice.

How do I delete the "D" drive?

| | | | After running fdisk /mbr, my HDD booted normally. But I suddenly
| have
| | | a "D"
| | | | drive showing in "My Computer".
| | | | The contents is exactly that of "C", and the capacity used and
| free is
| | | also
| | | | identical with "C".
| | | | I downloaded a few music files saved them on "C", they immediately
| | | also show
| | | | up on "D".
| | | |
| | | | I ran fdisk but I did not see the "D" drive at all.
| | | | How can I delete this drive?
| | | | Thanks,
| | | | AJS
