Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374)
For some time now now the Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (see below)
appears on the Windows Update site as a critical update and I'm not sure whether I need it or not. When I click on the "Read more..." link and click on the "Check for imaging software" that may need updating, it reports: "No affected imaging software was found on this computer." So, even though no imaging software was found that may need updating beyond the Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool, do I still need to install the GDI+ tool? I think I do, but wanted to ask the experts here. Thanks to all who respond, and please do not stop the printing presses . I am running, of course, good, old faithful Windows 99 SE. John Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374) Download size: 214 KB, 1 minute The Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool helps detect the presence of Microsoft products (other than Windows) that contain the GDI+ component. Microsoft customers can run this tool to help determine if a GDI+ security update is required. Microsoft recommends you visit the Office Update site to determine if your computer requires security updates for Office family products. Read more... |

I think I do, but wanted to ask the experts here. The tool itself is not a security update. It just runs a system check. It is, as the name clearly? states, a detection tool. It analyzes your system to see if you are running any applications which may contain a security vulnerability. If it finds any, it directs you to the update site. If it doesn't, the tool's job is done for the moment. although you can always run it again if you ever add more applications. To see a list of the applications that the tool applies to, go to http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;873374 In other words, if you know for a fact that you aren't running any of those applications, then you really don't need to run the tool to tell you that. |

John's point, though, is that even after you've run it and it says you don't need it, it still appears in the list of critical updates every time you go back to WU. I have the same problem as John (plus a couple of other updates which I know I don't need - the share-level password one is one). Is there any way of telling WU that you don't want these updates now or in the future? -- Regards Nigel Stapley www.judgemental.plus.com reply-to will bounce |

I guess I'll leave the tool alone and use it whenever I believe I have installed one of those softwares that needs updating. I had to respond to this post of yours to Nigel instead of your post to me, as the post to me does not show on my side. But I did see your response to me in Nigel's quote. Thanks also for the link.
