Default BIG MESS CONTINUES ORIG POST 9-6-04

Still no luck with Windows ME re-install. This was an
upgrade from 98.

1.As per last response, I was to boot to DOS, so I tried
to get on in safe mode, but when I did the mouse did not
work so I could not delete the ‘WMPLOC.DLL’ file. Can I do
this from a regular start-up?

2.My version of internet explorer is: 5.50.4134.100 and in
the Add/Remove programs it says Internet Explorer 6 &
internet tools. The response said to uninstall if it was
IE6. At http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293907 or
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=312451 it was suggested
to back-up my registry by typing: ‘scanregw’ in the run
window. After doing this it had a similar effect to system
restore (which doesn’t work) with mixed results. I now
have back my ‘sounds & multimedia’ folder in the control
file but several other programs are now not working.
Should I continue to now uninstall or is it possible to
get back to the previous registry (tell me how) when the
other programs were working first, then uninstall?

3. My primary goal is to reinstall Windows ME first and
hopefully the other problems 4, 5 & 6 below will be
resolved. I also now have the XP upgrade, should I try
that unstead or do we need to resolve ME first?

4. Error message for McAfee antivirus: ‘MSG: object
doesn’t support property or method:
g_localObjOS.GetLoacleInfo’urlmcp:llC:\PROGRA~1
\MCAFEE.COM\AGENT\SCUI.DLL::mys.htm Lline No:669.

5. My Peachtree Accounting: ‘BTRIEVE ERROR’ Max files
parameter of 20 is 100. Please correct and restart.

6. My Netzero internet connects for several seconds, then
disconnects.

See response inline.....

also...
1) please respond to the same thread in future - it makes everything a lot
easier!
2) I suspect that reinstalling ME will NOT solve your problems - try fixing
IE first (as described below), then report back with any symptoms that still
remain.

No - you really need to boot to DOS using a Win ME startup disk/EBD

Your problem here is one of your own making - caused by reinstalling Win ME
from the CD over an already-updated IE6 - you now have no options left
except to uninstall IE and reinstall it - look here for instructions.

Unless you intend to clean-install the XP, then you should clear your
problems with ME before attempting the upgrade (it may simply make matters
worse, otherwise)

4. Error message for McAfee antivirus: ‘MSG: object
doesn’t support property or method:
g_localObjOS.GetLoacleInfo’urlmcp:llC:\PROGRA~1
\MCAFEE.COM\AGENT\SCUI.DLL::mys.htm Lline No:669.

Probably also caused by reinstalling ME over itself - uninstall and
reinstall McAfee - may also be a result of the IE problems

5. My Peachtree Accounting: ‘BTRIEVE ERROR’ Max files
parameter of 20 is 100. Please correct and restart.

Is there a number accompanying the BTRIEVE ERROR message? - look in your
SYSTEM.INI file for any entries coontaing the word Max - and copy/paste the
lines involved to your response

6. My Netzero internet connects for several seconds, then
disconnects.

Probably caused by the problem with IE - see if fixing IE does the trick

I would forgo the hastle of attempting to reinstall the ME OS as I have been
using that for four years and it is by far the WORST OS EVER. It crashes
just about everytime I turn on my computer and does not inteface well with
installed programs. You would probably be better off installing the Windows
XP and going from there.

Don't blame you problems on the operating system you are using. There
could be and probably are many other reasons why you are experiencing
problems including using the incorrect drivers for your hardware to using
old applications that are incompatible with an operating system such as
Win Me that does not use Real Mode DOS. Changing OS is not always the
answer and there is at least one problem that can never be solved by
changing the operating system.
