Default Screen Saver leaving behind blank box in task bar/system tray

I am running Windows 98SE and I don't remember at what point this started
happening but I would like for it to stop. Here is the problem, when the
screen saver kicks on and then you move the mouse or space bar to make it go
away it leaves behind a blank box in the system tray at the bottom of the
computer. Sometimes it even says screen saver in it but most of the time it
is just a blank box. Depends on how many times you make the screen saver go
away as to how many blank boxes it leaves behind. Is there something I can
do to correct this? Thanks

1. The blank buttons are often screensaver related so try a different one
or don't use one at all--use power management to shut the monitor off after
a few minutes. Also see:

Icon Is Displayed on the Taskbar After Closing the Screen Saver 280722
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=280722

2. Update your video driver.

3. If the blank buttons started immediately after a software installation,
uninstall that software.

Determine what kind of a video card you have and then do an internet search
to see if you can find a newer driver. Assuming that your display is
currently working OK, go to control panel, system, device manager and click
on display adapter to find out what you have. If you can find an updated
driver, there may be instructions on how to install it. If not, on the
display adapter screen, click the driver tab

Thanks! Just so happens my monitor quivers and kind of flashes every once
in a while but usually straightens up pretty quickly. Could that be the
same problem - video driver?

Maybe. Could also be a fan or speakers too close to the monitor. It also
might need a different refresh rate.

I apologize for being so uneducated about the workings of this darn computer
but I don't know how to set refresh rate. Also, I went out and found an
updated driver for my video card (SiS3626) and I downloaded it, but it put
it in a folder of its own instead of installing over the old one. Can I
just delete the old folder contents and will it then recognize the new one?
I couldn't find instructions for installing update to video card. Thanks

First, you have to unzip the file. Once that is done, I would go to the
folder and double click the setup.exe file. Follow the on screen prompts.

There is also a file: SIS6326M.INF and that is an installation file as
well--right click and select Install. I don't know which way they intended
for the driver to be installed. If setup.exe doesn't work, try this method.
It's kind of odd that there are no instructions included.
