MSVCIRT.DLL & MSVCRT.DLL Problem
Greetings,
I have a problem regarding a damaged, corrupt, or problematic .dll file. When I click on one of my usual programs I recieve the message as laid out below; The below "symptoms & Cause" are from the MSkb. ( http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=296551 ) My main problem here is the very last bit of info they gave in regard to fixing the problem, I have put it in CAPS, it is at the end of "Cause". If one were to go on reading at the site, it continues to give a whole blurb about SFC and its use on M.E, but I am a win98 user. (both 'msvcirt & msvcrt' are currently in my sytem folder) Any help greatly appreciated. "SYMPTOMS When you start your computer, you may receive an error message similar to the following: Msvcirt.dll file is linked to missing export msvcrt.dll : ??_u@yapaxi@z Or, when you attempt to start a program, you may receive an error message similar to the following: The Msvcirt.dll file is linked to missing export msvcrt.dll These error messages may be preceded by an error message similar to the following: drive:\Path\filename - a device attached to the system is not functioning. When this occurs, you are unable to start the program." "CAUSE This behavior may occur after you install a program that overwrites either of the following two Windows system files with an incorrect or previous version: Msvcirt.dll Msvcrt.dll This behavior may also occur if one of these two files is damaged or missing. Can that last post, I just looked further down the page on MS's site
and the instructions for Win98 were right there. "paul" wrote in message ... Greetings, I have a problem regarding a damaged, corrupt, or problematic .dll file. MSVCIRT.DLL & MSVCRT.DLL Problem
Okay, I've had no replies to this post yet, so I thought I'd pop in
one last question before I go ahead and use the SFC and proceed to replace the damaged mentioned files. My question is: "If a program or something I downloaded caused this, will 'that' program still run after all is put back as it should be??" Secondly, I've clicked on heaps of programs that I have loaded just to see if they if they run, and they seem just fine..... in fact, the only one that is affected by this error is a Cad program I have. Are there any reasons for this? Thank for replies paul |

MSVCIRT.DLL & MSVCRT.DLL Problem
Extract a new file from the Win CD or the Cab files on your drive if
present, usually in c:\windows\options\cabs using SFC. To extract a file using SFC: Start Run, type in: sfc and press enter. Place a tic next to "Extract one file from......" Type in the name of the file and click Start. Browse to or type in the path to where the file is being restored from, the Win98 folder on the CD or where the .cab files are on the drive. Browse to or type in the path of where to save it, in your case, C:\Windows\System. Click Ok. For info on SFC: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/using_sfc.html -- Brian A. MSVCIRT.DLL & MSVCRT.DLL Problem
Did you install the CAD application just prior to getting the error? If
so then it would be the most likely candidate as the cause of the issue. -- Brian A. MSVCIRT.DLL & MSVCRT.DLL Problem
Hi Brian,
no, i've had cad for donkeys years, but it seems as of yesterday when I needed to use a part of its 'lisp math function' that I realised Cad wouldnt open. I am concerned as to why I am now in need of using SFC. Could you give me some background on exactly what the two files do, or are related to, ....... I mean, the ones I am about to 'delete' and 'replace' Also, once sfc has extracted the said files to the C:\ drive, is there any reason why I cant just go into 'system' and rename the existing ones to 'old', then simply 'cut and paste' the new ones to the system folder from the C:\drive? (or are those two particular files still in use and hence cannot be messed with during a 'current session'?)(and hence the need for the whole thing to be done via pure Dos.) Lastly, the only info I could get regarding why I am in this situation is because I may have downloaded and exe'd a program which has changed those particular files to some sort of earlier version.... I would be grateful if you could elaborate, or just put me on the right track. Unfortunately my printer is "on the fritz", but I have written out instructions for sfc as per. I have no problems in following the instructions, yours and the ones from the microsoft site, but I am the type of person who likes to do things once, and do them correctly and understand why. thanks Brian. |

MSVCIRT.DLL & MSVCRT.DLL Problem
I found these at http://www.processlibrary.com which has been a very helpful
resource on several occasions. msvcirt.dll is a module containing standard C library functions such as printf, memcpy, and cos. It is a part of the Microsoft C Library msvcrt.dll is a module containing standard C library functions such as printf, memcpy, and cos. It is a part of the Microsoft C Runtime Library. MSVCIRT.DLL & MSVCRT.DLL Problem
Paul,
If you have the 98 install/setup disk, with the OS up and running place it in the CD drive. Let it autorun and you will get to the main selection window. Choose to Browse the CD click on the Win98 folder. Look in Win98_55.cab for msvcirt.dll and msvcrt.dll. For Win98: Take note of the Size and Date to compare with what's on the system. msvcirt -- 74,752 KB -- 05/11/98 msvcrt.dll -- 280,576 KB -- 05/11/98 For 98SE: msvcirt -- 74,752 KB -- 04/23/99 msvcrt.dll -- 266,293 KB -- 04/23/99 To see the true file size on the system file right click the file and click Properties in the popup menu. If the files on the stystem do not match the ones in the CAB file they may be corrupt, use SFC to extract new ones. The files present on the system can not be renamed in Windows because they are being used. -- Brian A.
