Default USB and W98se

I posted this in plug & play, but no response, so trying in this folder.
Sorry for double posting!

I have purchased an NEC USB UF000x from Dell for my old laptop to replace my
parallel floppy drive that is not working. I had W95 running on the laptop
and was
told to upgrade to W98se so that the USB would be properly recognized.

I upgrqaded to W98se, but the system is still requesting that a driver be
installed for the new hardware - this is a USB floppy and supposedly there
should be no driver required - and of course, I can't find one on the W98
disk or on MS or Dell websites. So....the usb floppy drive is not recognized.

I also have an older Dell Dimension R400 that was running W95 - I upgraded
this machine to W98se as well, and tried the USB floppy plug in........same
problem - looking for a driver.

Please anyone help? I need a floppy drive on the laptop and am
frustratingly without one!!

Heh, heh, I didn't even call you stupid under my breath.
I'm not in this to denigrate anyone. I like to help people.
[One of my pet peeves is the tendency of many far too many people
to use Usenet as a vehicle for insults and inexcusable behaviour].

I don't know why you didn't get a hit on Yahoo -
maybe you included a word that prevented a hit?

Anyway, you can use my search term on Yahoo also.
[I normally include Yahoo when recommending a search.]

Good luck with the floppy. USB can be !!!*very*!!! frustrating.

There's a thing called the unofficial service pack for win98se that
fixes a bunch of nagging usb problems especially with usb2.0. I had
mixed usb results until
I installed this update collection.
YMMV

He also failed to mention that it is over 4 years old.

What's that thing going to do to machines which are up-to-date
- or almost so - with the official Windows Updates?

That's because it isn't over four years old. Latest update is August 2005.

Well, judging by the info available on that site, *I* certainly wouldn't
install it. Pretty shaky looking. Lots of claims, little detail. A lot of
cobbled-together stuff that the author has decided are important. I'd rather
decide for myself.

I neither recommend it nor warn against it. Just wanted to correct a factual
error in the other message and provide a link for anyone interested.
