Default How to install W98se on a laptop with W98

A few years ago I bought a used IBM Thinkpad.
It has W98 and several other programs, like Office,
that I want to retain. I want to upgrade to W98se so
that I can use a wireless card with the system. I
recently bought a W98se disc labelled 'for distribu-
tion with a new PC only". What, if any, is the way
to move to W98se and at the same time save the 2-3
other programs that I want to keep? MK

Any CD labelled "for distribution with a new PC only" is a
OEM CD which can only be installed on a clean hard drive
with no windows on it already. It wont upgrade. To keep
your current setting and programs you would need either a
Full Retail Win98SE CD or a Win98SE Upgrade CD both of
which are getting very hard to find these days but you can
luck out at either EBay or a large online computer store.
Also when upgrading a older ThinkPad much sure you go to
the downloads section at the IBM site and get the lastest
drivers and the lastest bios updates for your ThinkPad
model.

The other poster's answer is partially right; however, there is a
possibility that you can trick the OEM disk into doing an upgrade:

Now, with that said, you have to be aware that laptops often do not work
right when you load a W98 system to them that was not specifically designed
for that laptop. You should check with IBM for upgrade advice as physical
damage may even occur by loading the W98 system you have.

Your new disc is obviously an OEM so not an upgrade. You will have to do a
complete fresh installation.
The programs you will like to keep: If you have the Office CDs you can back
up what is necessary so that after installation of Win98 + Office you
restore your backup.
