I don't see any unnecessary stuff on there. Yes it does
let me order the duration column. It wasn't just really just suddenly, what I did was I formatted the hard drive and put Win ME on it because I was having lots of other problems. I started over completely and from the beginning that I did it, it has been slow booting before I put anything in it. -----Original Message----- Well, those figures look reasonably 'normal', so I don't think you've a problem there. I tried running scandisk on my D drive, and it said that
it was not properly formatted or a program such as disk utility has locked it. It says format the drive or wait for the utility to finish. I don't have any disk utility running, so I guess it does need formatted. Could that be the whole problem? It can't read the drive properly on startup? -----Original Message----- Well, those figures look reasonably 'normal', so I don't think you've a problem there. Geez, Ray, I've been glued to my machine waiting for your response g
Good to know that you've now found the cause of your problem and more importantly that Maxtor have given you an RTM number. I've only ever had to send one back to them and got excellent service. Well, I just found out that the hard drive is no longer
under warranty. So I have to buy a new one. They said the warranty expired in 2003. My book says that it has a 3 year warranty and I'm pretty sure I bought the hard drive either at the end of 2001 or beginning of 2002. I bought the hard drive at a computer show along with the rest of the computer. Does the warranty start when those people buy it? This just doesn't sound right. -----Original Message----- Geez, Ray, I've been glued to my machine waiting for your response g Good to know that you've now found the cause of your problem and more importantly that Maxtor have given you an RTM number. Does the warranty start when those
people buy it? This just doesn't sound right. For what it's worth Ray, take a look at:- http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Ma...ty%20Statement I thought that most HDD manufacturers give only 12 months warranty these days, with their 'mass market' products. Fortunately, HDD prices are much lower than they were several years ago g Mart "ray" wrote in message ... Well, I just found out that the hard drive is no longer under warranty. So I have to buy a new one. They said the warranty expired in 2003. My book says that it has a 3 year warranty and I'm pretty sure I bought the hard drive either at the end of 2001 or beginning of 200 2.I bought the hard drive at a computer show along with the rest of the computer. Does the warranty start when those people buy it? This just doesn't sound right. -----Original Message----- Geez, Ray, I've been glued to my machine waiting for your response g Good to know that you've now found the cause of your problem and more importantly that Maxtor have given you an RTM number. I've only ever had to send one back to them and got excellent service. Their reputation is still sound! Good luck with the replacement. Mart "ray" wrote in message ... it was the other hard drive. I finally removed it and now it boots very quick. The hard drive is damaged and I'm sending it to Maxtor so they can repair/replace it. -----Original Message----- As I suggested in another post - "Disconnect it temporally if you're not sure." See if things improve with the D: drive disconnected/removed. Mart "ray" wrote in message . .. I tried running scandisk on my D drive, and it said that it was not properly formatted or a program such as disk utility has locked it. It says format the drive or wait for the utility to finish. I don't have any disk utility running, so I guess it does need formatted. Could that be the whole problem? It can't read the drive properly on startup? -----Original Message----- Well, those figures look reasonably 'normal', so I don't think you've a problem there. BTW - you can 'order' the timing by clicking on the "Duration" column heading. The only other thoughts a- Did this "slowdown" suddenly happen? Have you loaded any new software recently? Check your start-up axis for 'unnecessary programs/utilities. Try http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php and checkout the second bullet point in particular Mart "ray" wrote in message . .. If minutes, then that *might* explain your "1-2 minutes just sitting there" But you need to identify the cause of the 1.722 at that point. What operation does it say is taking place at that time? The first link doesn't work, page cannot be displayed -----Original Message----- Try Boot Log Analyzer (Freeware) from http://www.vision4.dial.pipex.com/ It might help you to pin down the cause of the slow boot- ups. (NB - it also works on WinME) Look at the 'Duration' column and look for an event (or events) taking several 'tens' or 'hundreds' of seconds, instead of fractions or several seconds. (5 mins = 300 seconds) Also see "Load Failures Listed in the Bootlog.txt File" http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx? scid=kb;en- us;127970 If you not sure how to decipher the results, you might need to seek the assistance of your local PC repair shop. To be fair, the BLA page does state that " ... interpreting the results requires in- depth technical knowledge." HTH Mart "ray" wrote in message news:273401c4a194$414020d0$a601280a@ph x.gbl... I just installed ME on a formatted hard drive. Everything is working good except it takes a long time to boot up. It gets to the windows screen and just sits there. The only thing on screen is a green background and the hourglass mouse pointer. The red light is flashing so it is doing SOMETHING, but I don't know why it is taking so long. It takes about 1-2 mintues of just sitting there before the windows screen finally comes up with all the icons and whatever. . . . . . . |
