Default Is Win 98 normally faster than XT Pro?

Is Win 98 normally faster than XT Pro? The below system is way
faster than five newer store loaded 2.5 gigahertz and faster machines
with XT Pro. Even removing their McAfee and Norton, they still take
about three minutes to load, where the Win 98 will boot and load any
program I have in less that fifteen seconds.

If it's boot time you are comparing then the systems are probably more
affected by the devices that are being initialized and the network
connections that are being established rather than by any differences in the
operating systems.

PIII@733Mz/512ram/Radeon7200 dual/boot with 98SE/XP Pro, desktop/apps seem
about same performance under either OS, games ARE faster under 98SE. XP's
better when doing video capture off the Radeon. Also
/1024ram/nVidia4800SE seems about same regarding startup and small
app loading times. Large apps (e.g. Autocad, Photoshop etc.) fast
improvement. Obviously faster when actually using apps, particularly when
many are open at once. No comparism with game speed, 733 is getting
stretched to it's limits to run the ones it still can now-a-days.

At a guess, your pc doesn't have a nic and the others do? I've noticed that
seems to make a lot of diff in bootup time.

On one of my uninstall and reinstall trying to get the nic to
recognize a new cable modem, I just left it out, seeing the USB had no
trouble configuring it. I don't play games so I can't judge there,
AutoCad-14 loads a 3D ten meg drawing in seconds, the XP lap tops, I can
go off and make a cup of coffee using some the time they take.
Thanks guys for the come backs.
