IE 6 sp1 freeze during McAfee reinstall

When I try to reinstall Mcafee online Virus Scan the window stops responding
shortly after the download begins. Other IE windows remain active as do
other programs on my pc. Only the download window freezes.

I have been struggling with McAfee technicians for over 2 weeks to resolve
this problem. My case was 'escalated' to advanced technicians Thursday, but I
have heard nothing from them. Meanwhile I do not have virus protection.

Possible fix? : I read something about potential mime but can no longer find
it. "The MIME type returned by the server does not match the cached file name
extension." The help page used to be he

McAfee said it could be the problem. Of course they also said all of the
other fixes should work....

Fixes I have tried (not in any particular order):
* deleting temporary internet files cookies history and windows Temp files.
* deleted IE objects from mcafee
* changing the IE settings to match those recommended by McAfee
* adding mcafee.com top trusted in privacy
* I had no pop up blockers installed
* uninstalled MSn and Yahoo toolbars.
* i use adaware regularly
* editing the registry for any mcafee entries not deleted by Add/Remove when
i uninstalled VS 9 before attempting to reinstall.
* I have run virus scans at trends housecall and SuperDat engine run in dos
from Mcafee - always come up clean
* run scan disk
* uninstalled IE6, but i still could not download in IE 5.5 because mcafee
informed me IE 6 is required for their products.
* reinstalled IE 6 sp 1
* added mcafee to
* reinstalling script engine
* in dos reregistering scrrun.dll or something like that.

NOTE: the first time I tried to download the McAfee VirusScan9
after editing the registry I got an error page telling me I needed to
enable Active X. However Active x were already enabled. Every other time the
download window simply stops responding and eventually I close it using
Cntrl/alt/delete .

Please help if you think you have a solution.
