On the startup tab I have a process starting up that I am unfamiliar with...
DisableEHCI path C:\Windows\NoUSB20.Exe I have never seen this before on any *Win98-SE system*, does anyone know what this process is? I did a Goggle search and the search led me into forums and I became more confused. I just want to know if this is a safe startup process??? I can account for all the other 13 processes starting w/Windows. What has changed, I am dual booting and I have a drive w/three partitions. I am running Win-XP on one partiton and data and my stuff on the another partition.... and Win98-SE on the 3'rd partition, the system is fat 32 all partitions. I do notice in the device mgr. under USB serial bus controllers that in Win-98SE I have 2 open host controllers and 2 USB root hubs and in Win-XP I have 3 controllers and 3 hubs, could this be why Windows-98SE is loading (disableEHCI) at startup? I have been trying to find the answer and would like to be assured that the process is safe. Thank you, Star |

No one seems to know for sure where that entry is coming from. Enhanced Host
Controller Interface (EHCI) is the USB interface used by USB 2.0, and the entry you see appears to be a program to disable it. I don't know why. When did it appear? Did you install software or hardware prior to that? Find the file C:\Windows\NoUSB20.Exe, right-click it and click Properties. Look for any info on the properties sheet that might identify what program installed it, and post back. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Star" wrote in message ... Windows DDK is the Windows Driver Development Kit:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/ddk/default.mspx The file should not have come from the Win98 installation....it is a driver that was built with the Win2K DDK, and as such I would think it to be a driver for WinXP/2K. Could it have appeared after the installation of WinXP? The name of the driver indicates that it disables USB 2.0, so you shouldn't see any issues with USB 1.1 regardless.....which is what Win98 natively supports. if you install USB 2.0 ports by adding a PCI card and installing drivers for it, I would be curious if this NoUSB20.exe file affects their operation. Do you have USB 2.0 ports on the computer, or just the original USB 1.1 ports? If the former, do you have Enhanced USB Host Controllers listed in Device Manager, in addition to the Universal Host Controller? Anything I say about it is conjecture, as I can't find any references to it. I would for the moment let it be....if you later install a USB 2.0 add-on card, and have difficulties, you can then try disabling the app through msconfig, and see what happens. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Star" wrote in message ... *Thank you,* "glee" wrote in message ...

I believe you have the right idea about the bootlog.txt....it is created at the end
of installation, and can be re-created by doing a logged boot at any time. The file $ldr$ may be a temp file...I have not seen it before. What is the size, creation date, and is there any readable text in it if you open it with Notepad or a Notepad replacement app such as GUN? Do you currently have any entries in the "Other" category of Device Manager? I have replied to your other post Curious Inquiry. Ah, but you DO have NT, inasmuch as you have Windows XP installed (I presume in a
dual-boot with 98), and Windows XP is built on the NT kernel. It uses the file NTLDR in the root of the C: drive. "Short for NT loader, NTLDR is a program loaded from the hard drive boot sector that displays the Microsoft Windows NT startup menu and helps Microsoft Windows NT load." When you start your dual-boot computer, you should see a boot menu where you choose which operating system you want to load....that is NTLDR at work. The info in the file when you view it with Wordpad, is just the embedded messages that it *can* display if a situation warrants. The $ldr$ file that you see *may* be a leftover from an aborted Windows XP installation. Did you start and then cancel an XP install at some time prior to the current successful installation. The text you see in the file seem to be the same type of text as in the NTLDR file.
