On the startup tab I have a process starting up that I am unfamiliar with...
DisableEHCI path C:\Windows\NoUSB20.Exe

I have never seen this before on any *Win98-SE system*, does anyone know
what this process is? I did a Goggle search and the search led me into
forums and I became more confused.

I just want to know if this is a safe startup process??? I can account for
all the other 13 processes starting w/Windows.

What has changed, I am dual booting and I have a drive w/three partitions.
I am running Win-XP on one partiton and data and my stuff on the another
partition.... and Win98-SE on the 3'rd partition, the system is fat 32 all
partitions.

I do notice in the device mgr. under USB serial bus controllers that in
Win-98SE I have 2 open host controllers and 2 USB root hubs and in Win-XP I
have 3 controllers and 3 hubs, could this be why Windows-98SE is loading
(disableEHCI) at startup? I have been trying to find the answer and would
like to be assured that the process is safe.

Thank you,

Star

No one seems to know for sure where that entry is coming from. Enhanced Host
Controller Interface (EHCI) is the USB interface used by USB 2.0, and the entry you
see appears to be a program to disable it. I don't know why.

When did it appear? Did you install software or hardware prior to that?
Find the file C:\Windows\NoUSB20.Exe, right-click it and click Properties. Look for
any info on the properties sheet that might identify what program installed it, and
post back.

*** The hd format, partitioning was done on 7-25, Win98-SE was installed

checked the device mgr. carefully on both systems. Next, I put the puter on
the lan and went to Windows update and installed all criticals both systems,
did nothing more that day, did not run msconfig utility.

The target file for the entry in C:\Windows was noticed the following day in
msconfig utility... and I went to check it out. It was created during the
installation of the OS's... 7/25 or Microsoft has done it, maybe through
install on demand and I was unaware.
Properties\version tab
Company - Windows(R) 2000 DDK provider
Product Name- Windows(R) 2000 DDK driver

What/Who is DDK???

I was suspcious because I didn't see company- Microsoft. After, I checked it
out, I plugged in a old USB mouse and Win98-SE had no problems and I
installed the driver. I was worried that I had *no working USB for
Win-98SE*, however device mgr. confirmed no problems. The mouse works fine
in Win-XP and I didn't have to install the driver.

I have installed little to date, antivirus, spybot, spyware blaster,
acrobat, irfanview to Win-98SE and no softwware to Win-XP. I have checked
the bootlog.txt and it was created on 7/25 at 6:49pm and the disable
EHCI-USB20 was created at 6:51pm-- after W-98 installed, I immediately did
W-XP.

How do you think/suspect that this process **will affect my puter**, I seem
to have good working USB, will I have problems installing more USB devices,
like my printer??? Is it a problem that I should continue to try to
solve???

Windows DDK is the Windows Driver Development Kit:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/ddk/default.mspx

The file should not have come from the Win98 installation....it is a driver that was
built with the Win2K DDK, and as such I would think it to be a driver for WinXP/2K.
Could it have appeared after the installation of WinXP?

The name of the driver indicates that it disables USB 2.0, so you shouldn't see any
issues with USB 1.1 regardless.....which is what Win98 natively supports. if you
install USB 2.0 ports by adding a PCI card and installing drivers for it, I would be
curious if this NoUSB20.exe file affects their operation. Do you have USB 2.0 ports
on the computer, or just the original USB 1.1 ports? If the former, do you have
Enhanced USB Host Controllers listed in Device Manager, in addition to the Universal
Host Controller?

Anything I say about it is conjecture, as I can't find any references to it. I
would for the moment let it be....if you later install a USB 2.0 add-on card, and
have difficulties, you can then try disabling the app through msconfig, and see
what happens.

Windows for the first time or am I all wrong?

At C:\Windows, I have a file, not hidden, but I don't hide files. The name
is is $ldr$. I am pretty familiar w/files at C:\Windows and this is one I
know I've never had in my C:\Windows folder. Do you know what it is? I did a

Glen, your an MVP and I would greatly appreciate your feedback a post I

EHCI-USB20 was created at 6:51pm-- after W-98 installed, I immediately

did
W-XP.

The name of the driver indicates that it disables USB 2.0, so you

shouldn't see any
issues with USB 1.1 regardless.....which is what Win98 natively

supports.
if you
install USB 2.0 ports by adding a PCI card and installing drivers for

it,
I would be
curious if this NoUSB20.exe file affects their operation.

*** Do you have USB 2.0 ports on the computer, or just the original USB

ports?

If the former, do you have Enhanced USB Host Controllers listed in

Device
Manager, in addition to the Universal
Host Controller?
*** No E-USB, never have had it.
I have no PC card installed... is PC card and PCI the same?

Anything I say about it is conjecture, as I can't find any references

to
it. I
would for the moment let it be....if you later install a USB 2.0

add-on
card, and
have difficulties, you can then try disabling the app through

msconfig,
and see
what happens.

*** I will let it be for now as it's not hendering me in anyway. Will

post
back in the future if I incur USB problems in W-98se.

Thanks for your thoughful help and research.

No one seems to know for sure where that entry is coming from.

Enhanced
Host
Controller Interface (EHCI) is the USB interface used by USB 2.0,

and
the
entry you
see appears to be a program to disable it. I don't know why.

When did it appear? Did you install software or hardware prior to

that?
Find the file C:\Windows\NoUSB20.Exe, right-click it and click

Properties.
Look for
any info on the properties sheet that might identify what program
installed it, and
post back.

I believe you have the right idea about the bootlog.txt....it is created at the end
of installation, and can be re-created by doing a logged boot at any time.

The file $ldr$ may be a temp file...I have not seen it before. What is the size,
creation date, and is there any readable text in it if you open it with Notepad or a
Notepad replacement app such as GUN?

Do you currently have any entries in the "Other" category of Device Manager?

I have replied to your other post Curious Inquiry.

No, a PC Card usually means what used to be called a PCMCIA card, which

fits into a
slot in a laptop computer. The card is about the size of a credit card,

and they
are used for items such as modems or NICs for laptops.
A PCI card is a circuit board that fits into a PCI slot on the motherboard

of a
desktop computer. All sorts of devices are made on PCI cards, including

modems,
NICs, USB 2.0 port cards, and many others.

*** OK, I understand perfectly, I have a PCI modem and ethernet card. I
install drivers for these devices. After, Windows is installed, I see PCI
devices *other* in device mgr. The modem for my puter shows under PCI
other... called ennumerator, and I install the driver. It took trial & error
yrs. ago for me to understand that I needed to install the driver for the
ennumerator. PCI modems can show different in the device mgr. But now I
understand it. Boy, have I learned the hard way!! I installed Windows 98-se
on another machine last month and it showed in the device mgr. as a
speakerphone, not ennumerator like mine.

Could it have appeared after the installation of WinXP?

*** By the dates, doesn't appear too;

I am not sure why you see the bootlog.txt as significant of the Win98

installation.
Windows XP also creates a bootlog.txt. Are you sure the bootlog.txt you

are viewing
was made during Win98 boot, and not XP?

***I just noted the time, that's why I thought it was significant. Yes, I'm
sure it's W-98 bootlog. It's at C:\Windows 98 w/all the other other W-98
system files. When is this file created? I was thinking near the end of the
install since it starts C:\Windows\himem.sys (high memory) and then loads
Windows for the first time or am I all wrong?
[000FEA9F] Loading Device = C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
[000FEA9F] LoadSuccess = C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
[000FEA9F] Loading Device = C:\WINDOWS\DBLBUFF.SYS
[000FEA9F] LoadSuccess = C:\WINDOWS\DBLBUFF.SYS
[000FEA9F] Loading Device = C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS
[000FEA9F] LoadSuccess = C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS

At C:\Windows, I have a file, not hidden, but I don't hide files. The name
is is $ldr$. I am pretty familiar w/files at C:\Windows and this is one I
know I've never had in my C:\Windows folder. Do you know what it is? I did a
Google search, Google gave me no search returns.

Glen, your an MVP and I would greatly appreciate your feedback a post I
made... Subject: Curious Inquiry about PC Failure. Have you ever heard of
anything like what I describe regarding my puter failure? I was hoping an
MVP would respond to me. I experienced PC 'H---' last month. What has
happened to George Dundat, I miss him in this group?

Ah, but you DO have NT, inasmuch as you have Windows XP installed (I presume in a
dual-boot with 98), and Windows XP is built on the NT kernel. It uses the file
NTLDR in the root of the C: drive.
"Short for NT loader, NTLDR is a program loaded from the hard drive boot sector that
displays the Microsoft Windows NT startup menu and helps Microsoft Windows NT load."

When you start your dual-boot computer, you should see a boot menu where you choose
which operating system you want to load....that is NTLDR at work. The info in the
file when you view it with Wordpad, is just the embedded messages that it *can*
display if a situation warrants.

The $ldr$ file that you see *may* be a leftover from an aborted Windows XP
installation. Did you start and then cancel an XP install at some time prior to the
current successful installation. The text you see in the file seem to be the same
type of text as in the NTLDR file.

George...his name is George Gedye, and he posts as Bindar Dundat (as in Been
there, Done that :-))
