Windows 98 second edition CD is readily available via torrent.

Don't waste your time installing 98 original edition.

You can get in trouble with microsoft for using torrents. This usenet
group is hosted by them.

No you can't.

Who told you that?

Microsoft would never know that you downloaded win-98 from a torrent.

This usenet group is hosted by them.

No, this usenet group is NOT HOSTED by Micro$oft.

This usenet group is *carried* by microsoft's usenet server, and it is
also carried by hundreds or thousands of other usenet servers around the
world - none of which have any specific ability to censor or control
this group or impose rules which other servers must follow.

For example, I do not read or post messages to this newsgroup by
accessing the microsoft server - and neither do you.

then why do people get prosecuted for downloading and hosting there
software illegally?

Nobody said anything about whether they can censor it, but their lawyers
often threaten people in these group, so why tell the person to do
somethings that can get them into trouble, because it is illegal?

If you have windows 98 (first edition, aka "Gold"), then you don't have
the right or the ability to update it to second edition for no cost.
Microsoft has never made any such update package that can take you from
98 to 98se and made it freely available to anyone who has 98 first
edition. Second edition is a SEPARATE PRODUCT. It is not a free
update, it never was.

If you follow the service pack upgrade path you get the same identical
upgrades offered with se.

Linux is too much of a hassle for most people to actually setup and use
on a day to day basis.

Things have changed alot since 1998

If people get into the habit of using it rather than windows, it will
do much more damage to the windows brand then helping people to swipe
windows, thus encouraging the windows habit.

I encourage the continued use of Windows 98, and if not that then use XP
- and pirate it if you can.

Starving Microsoft of revenue is just as good as having people move away
from Windows and switch to Linux.

If the microsoft os is so much better than others, why do you want to
starve them of revenue? If microsoft goes under people will be left with
what you claim is an os that is TOO HARD to setup and use! Maybe your
just lazy and making excuses for it.

Microsoft does not need to know as EVERY prosecutor, solicitor, or
other [bound by local and International Law, treaty, sanction, or the
like] across the planet is bound to take action for pirated software and
or illegal materials should you be caught with it or offering it upon
the Internet...

So YES, you can and will be prosecuted if you are determined to have
or have partaken in the illegal distribution of these types of materials.

Your example fails, as usual to comprehend that EVERY USENET
forum/newsgroup carried, has a physical MASTER host. That you FAIL to
understand that there MUST be a master to collect, offer, and
disseminate the postings isn't unusual for you though, as you rarely
understand much of anything anyone takes the time to provide so you CAN
understand.
You and I have discussed this previously to great extent, and I even
provided an example to show you what happens when that master host goes
down.

For instance, this supposed discussion you are supposedly having with
No Alternative *just popped into* the master server... apparently
albasani.net was NOT part of, authorized as, or sending its postings to
the master host. Hence, any other messages MAY have been transferred to
local or other mirror sources, they were NOT, however, part of the
master distribution.
