(i dont like aol) Many Win98 users evaluated AOL in the 1990s and most of them discarded it quickly as buggy and unncessary. The simplest method of removal probably was then (a decade ago so I have forgotten) to reinstal Win98 from scratch. But the tinkerer can rapidly: 1. Segregate (rename xAOL for AOL) all folders with AOL in the name. After successful reboot and function as normal these folders can be deleted at leisure. 2. Search all *.INF files for the string AOL, and delete them. 3. Search the Registry for the string AOL and (after first Exporting for backup the whole Registry) removing these keys. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

If you delete every instance of AOL from the registry, you remove the AOL graphic format entry as well. That happens to be installed with/by IE [nd even got an update or two] and several other browsers and is still occasionally used/found on the Web. A couple areas that may have large amounts of AOL junk is in Program Files/Common Files/AOL and/or Coach, a folder called /Extras in root, any Folders you used for saved or downloaded files, pictures, and a lot of others. *IF* you have multiple versions installed and the LAST was 9.0 then you have a tool to remove the prior versions almost completely, and MOST of AOL 9.0. Use the un-installer provided with AOL 9.0 to remove the older versions FIRST and then cleanup after you un-install 9.0. Here's someone who thinks like the OP appears to and provides some information on how to: save, un-install, and various other AOL stuff. http://www.livejournal.com/tools/mem...?user=anti_aol -- MEB http://peoplescounsel.org/ref/windows-main.htm Windows Info, Diagnostics, Security, Networking http://peoplescounsel.org The "real world" of Law, Justice, and Government ___--- |
