Can hardware, like a mobo, interfere with win98SE?

When looking at some motherboards and downloading manuals and software
related to them, at the ASUS site, for example, I noticed that in the
process of finding the files, the computer asked me what operating
system I had, and provided a list of OSes.

In one case win98 was listed, and in another, it wasn't. Only XP was
(and some others)

Does this mean that the mobo won't work with win98SE?

I asked some people and was told that the problem is getting drivers.

Does that mean drivers for onboard hardware that used to me added on
with a plug in card? Like sound?

If sound drivers that run on win98 aren't available for a mobo, isn't
it possible to disable the onboard sound and use a sound card that
comes with its own drivers?

It used to be one could tell in advance what he was buying and if it
would work. But things are pretty complicated now. I would hate to
assemble a whole computer and find I couldn't run win98 on it.

Have any of you had a problem running win98SE because of the hardware
used?

Thanks

OTOH if one wanted to run a newer OS such as XP, Win7 or Linux...
Win98 could be run within a virtual machine

I had a heard of that. That's a good idea. Does anyone think that
won't work?

Not a problem at all for W98/SE in a virtual machine.

and since the hardware is emulated...most (or all) of it would work

I guess I can get details when the time comes, in a year or two.

Thanks.

My life is dark enough... I have XP on my E: now, will
eventually/hopefully do the film/video archiving I installed it
for (card is XP/Vista only) /someday/ (it only took me 5 months
to install the card and software, I'm not in a hurry) and then
it's gone, and hello Linux - once this 98SELite machine dies and
I can't find one to run that moderately-acceptable-thanks-to-
Lite OS.

Man I miss 95B.

Actually what I really miss is watching Letterman in the 80's
instead of wasting away in front of Idiot Box #2.

Thanks for the clarification. Sounds good. Anyway, so far this
machine is running very well.
