Default Kernel32.dll had 0 bytes

My Win98 system ground to a halt. It would boot but freeze soon after,
usually when saving something. This coincided with the appearance of the
Sasser virus, but they say it doesn't affect W98 systems.
I eventually managed to repair the system, but it was old and unstable, so I
got some new kit with Windows XP, and put the old drive in as a slave hard
drive.

When cleaning up, I found a zero size file in the root directory called
kernel32.dll.

How could that have happened? The original is still in the Windows folder.
Virus scans have revealed nothing.
