Default Invalid page fault in module comctl32.dll

I need some help!!! My problem is similiar to a problem already posted by
Ryan on 2/12/2005, the icons and taskbar will not appear after logging on to
my computer. My error message however is that the invalid page fault is in
module comctl32.dll at 015f:bfb74ad7. I installed new software a couple of
days ago but it was working fine, and was still ok yesterday after a shutdown
and reboot. I received the computer from a friend a long time ago with win95
already on it, they did not have the disk for it, and about 2 years ago
another friend upgraded it to win98 for me, so I do not have either
installation disk, if I am going to need one. (I have a master recovery disk
for the computer. But I would like to salvage what programs or info I have
on it if poss) I tried to run it in safe mode but after the logon screen the
same thing happened. And scan registry found no errors, I couldnt find any
info about errors with this particular module, so if anyone could provide
help with this I would appreciate it. Thanx!! This is the message:

Thanks, but none of those links helped me solve my problem. As I said, the
problem occurs at startup, not when I am in a program, and Im not trying to
get into internet explorer, I just wanted to get onto my computer. And as I
said the only change made to my computer was that I installed software a few
days before and when I shut down and started up after that it was fine until
yesterday. But thanks for the suggestions anyway.

The easiest to do of the choices in there is...

(a) Hold CTRL as you boot for the Startup Menu.
(b) Select "Command Prompt Only", which is DOS.
(c) At the DOS prompt, enter...

REN C:\Windows\System\Comctl32.dll Comctl32.dl_
COPY C:\Windows\Sysbckup\Comctl32.dll C:\Windows\System

Here is what that file looks like in Windows & in DOS...

Perhaps your DLL file is broken, you can find a better version of
comctl32.dll at http://www.dll-download.net

That is often not a good idea - simply downloading some DLLs won't fix the
base problem. The best bet is to find out what program or update loaded
that particular DLL and then reapply that update or program.
