Default Can't install ME

Pat, I was away from my PC for a while g but as Noel implied, the CD may
well be 'machine specific'.

However, not too sure where to start here except to ask if the CD has folder
called \win9x in the root, with all the setting up files and CABs (some 25
of them!) ?
Just trying to ascertain whether you've got a 'recovery CD'.

You appear to have "made directory" (md) called w9xflat on your HD. Is there
anything in it? - see above

NB -
xcopy e: c:\w9xflat /e
has a space between y and e:
a space between e: and c
and a space between t and /e

Also might be worth running scanreg (in Real Mode DOS) on your C: drive
again using the Startup Disk just to confirm there is 'nothing wrong' with
the HD.

Whilst you are in Real Mode DOS (with CD-ROM support) confirm that you are
able to read from your CD. Check that you can see the folders and files.

Well,
This is the cd that accompanied this pc. I can't figure out what I'm
doing wrong as far as copying it.

No - it means that

1) when the PC dies, you have to buy a new operating system for the
replacement PC
2) you may not sell the CD unless accompanied by the PC you got it with.

Okay, I got it copied to the HD, using a different command. I used copy and
didn't use all of the command that that you had said, got it off of a web
page. Anyway, now the monitor goes off when installing and it does it
during or right after scandisk. Does this mean my ati 7500 video card is
bad?

As I said earlier, "Just trying to ascertain whether you've got a 'recovery
CD'." - as opposed to an MS retail or 'standard' OEM CD. So, it would help
if you were to answer my questions.

Please confirm that there is a \win9x folder containing 25 CAB files.

I've no idea why your monitor 'goes off' - I don't know *what* you are
installing, nor exactly what (version of WinMe) you've copied to your HD.

What 'different' command did you use to copy your CD? You may not have
copied ALL of the essential files/folders, for all I know.

How did you run scandisk? - from the boot floppy?

Under the circumstances, as it would appear that you've got an OEM CD of an
(as yet) unspecified version, you may be better checking your User Manual to
see what the OEM suggests.

Mart, he's got an OEM CD (per the post while you were away).

Pat, unless your monitor was turning off unexpectedly in Windows I doubt
it's your vidcard. Check your BIOS for "Monitor Power Save Function" or
somesuch. May as well turn off *any* powersaving functions (sleep
hibernate, etc) while you're in there.

I didn't have that on in the bios. Plus if I move the mouse, it wouldn't
make the monitor come back on. I had all power saving features disabled.
