Default Uninstalling IE6 Causing Boot Problems

Hi, I thought Internet Explorer was just another program that I could
kill through Add/Remove...but after I chose the "Restore to Previous
Version" option, Windows ME did not boot correctly after the
restart...it's hanging after loading the taskbar. I can't boot to Safe
Mode correctly either...no start button, icons, or taskbar. I've tried
booting from disk, but don't know what to do after getting the command
prompt. Where to go from here? Any help appreciated.

You could try running system restore to roll your system back to a
checkpoint prior to your attempt to uninstall IE using the following
method which requires you to boot to DOS using your EBD and editing
system.ini and replacing the line
shell=explorer.exe with one reading
shell=C:\windows\system\restore\rstrui.exe
Now remove the EBD and see if you can start Win Me and boot direct into
System Restore.

For more details see KB 279736 "How to Start the System Restore Tool from
a Command Prompt" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=279736) which
mentions using progman.exe after which you can then locate and run
rstrui.exe however using rstrui.exe as above works equally well.

That is the MSFT "Gotcha". Internet Explorer is so tightly bound to the
Window OS that removal is next to impossible.

One solution that's worked for a few people is to boot with a floppy, and
run

SCANREG /FIX

from the DOS prompt

Reboot when the process is complete

It's worked in the wild, Mike - on real systems.

Noel,

"Real" system or VPC? VPC here with advanced features disabled at the
moment. :-) Real metal will have to wait now until tomorrow. :-(

Sadly it appears I forgot to change my time zone. :-) Tomorrow a new day
dawns! Peace in our time and all that. Have just seen daughter #1 off to
Edinburgh for the month so may just find I've got time to do my own thing.
:-)
