Default ScanDisk & Disk Disk Defragmenter & Thumbnail View ( A bit lengthy)

Hi folks!

Feeling a little better to deal with technical stuff for now... until...
Thanks for your concern.

I still have the same 'puter problems, but the list got longer. How did that
happen? lol

ScanDisk will not go do anything, except go back and forth from "Checking
file allocation tables..." and "Checking folders". The bar does not appear.
Then, the typical "ScanDisk has restarted 10 times..." error message
appears.

Disk Defragmenter will not go beyond "0% complete". Show Details is
completely blank. It will run continuously until I stop it.

They both were working fine in normal mode until the few nights. Could this
have anything to CA Security Center being installed. I put that on snooze to
try to run both of the above apps, but that did not work.

Thinking safe mode? Oh my, do not think. Safe mode is not an
operable option.

AND in My Documents, the Image does not appear in thumbnail view.
A must for me. It needs a fixin' fer ser.

I want to these to my computer to do maintenance while I am sleeping as they
were before weekly and nightly - respectively - in normal mode.

As always, I appreciate your help.
SGB

P.S. Heirloom - Love that "essgeebee"!
Save My Desktop! instructions did not work. It will not create a smd.exe
file. I thank you ever so kindly for trying to help me so much, but I
decided to let those !#$%^& go wherever they want to dwell. It is a
nuisance, but I can live with that until I get my new computer as long as it
does not effect the operating system. Also, I have always had Tweak UI
installed. It is one of those I gotta have it things. Made sure all the
settings were as you indicated, and they were. smiles

Mike - I will pay your airfare to my home to be my personal computer
assistant if you do not mind going in the cargo section. I will have FedEx
overnight you in a suitable corrugated box. BFG So, will ya come? Huh?
j/k You have been great right here in this newsgroup. So, stay put.

Joan - Thank you for the well wishes.

(Auntie) Heather (Virus) - I had a dream about you.

For you scandisk problems, why don't you try this;
Reboot with a Boot Floppy
Select option #2 or #3
at the A prompt type scandisk C: /surface (note the space after the
colon).

For defragging, I still recommend DISKEEPER LITE because it's free and
effective, however you can pay the $30 or so and get the full version which
allows you to schedule operating it at your convenience.

Hope this helps.

Any recent changes could cause the scandisk and defrag problems you are
seeing and an AV application fits the bill very well. As for why safe
mode is not an option, please explain although for your problem
temporarily disable the AV scanner (you will find Snooze as an right click
option on the systray icon) is probably the way to go.

Thumbnail view.
Have you enabled this View ! Thumbnails? How are you viewing My
Documents, via a desktop icon, or by clicking either My Documents or C:\My
Documents in Windows Explorer?

Mike - I will pay your airfare to my home to be my personal computer

No problem at all. Just send me the funds and I will arrange my own
transport. vbg UPS have just quoted me US$210 to transport about a
third of me from London to New York so if you send $600 I'll make my own
arrangements. Of course I'll also want to return home so you'd better make
it US$1,200.

SGB:

Why not try just disabling your AV and the firewall for the duration of the
scan, be it defrag or scandisk?
It works fine for me.

Harry.

Default ScanDisk & Disk Disk Defragmenter

Hi Dapper Dan -

Floppy drive is removed.

I don't dare install another software program on this system. As the folks
in here can tell you, this ol' computer cannot take much more. I am trying
to keep it running - with help from the great people in this newsgroup -
until next year when I buy a brand new computer.

I only want fix the existing problems.

Thanks so much for the reply.

I tried the snooze thing. Please read my first message, again.

Thumbnail view is enabled through My Documents. Here is an article, but it
does not pertain to Windows ME, only Windows 2000.

As you say the article you mention has no relevance to Win Me systems.
What exactly do you see when viewing "My Documents" using thumbnail view?
Does thumbnail view work in sub-folders contained within My Documents?
Does thumbnail view work when viewing other folders, that is folders not
contained within My Documents? Again may I ask, how are you accessing My
Documents?

What are the exact problems you have when running either scandisk or
defrag in Safe Mode?

Default ScanDisk & Thumbnail View

Mike Sweetie -

I am trying to explain the best I can.

I open my documents by clicking on the icon on my desktop. I click on the
folder My Pictures Click on a subfolder Click on View Click on
Thumbnail. All that appears are the icons for a .jpg. .jpeg or .gif image.
The actual image does not appear. I was referencing that article to try to
explain what was happening with my system. If I can only registry tweak it
for Win ME as they did Win 2000.

ScanDisk and Defrag will not run at all in safe mode or normal mode even
with CA Security on snooze. They do nothing at all. They get hung up on the
beginning of the program.

Thank you!

So not just My Documents but also its sub-folders.

ScanDisk and Defrag will not run at all in safe mode or normal mode

Just how can one person turn their system into such a disaster? Did you
take a course in computer destruction? Enquiring minds need to know! How
are you when it comes to using a microwave or washing machine? Did you
even bother with a VCR? vbg
