Default DISK BOOT FAILURE

I couple of weeks ago, my win98 box said "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM
DISK AND PRESS ENTER". Me and my dad had been trying to fix the CD drive on
it, and then it said that message on the next boot up. The win98 was factory
installed, so I couldn't boot from CD (besides, the CD drive was still not
working), and when I ran a bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com , it said it could
not detect any physical hard drives. I already took apart the computer and
am toying with the motherboard and other stuff (pretending itsa bomb and
snippin' wires and stuff), but i was wondering if you guys could tell me what
to do if that happens to my other (and much more valueable) winXP box. Any
suggestions?

Well...
the machine was probably repairable
but now that you've snipped wires etc...you probably destroyed it!

Examine the cables (IDE and Power) and make sure they are snug.
Check the Master-Slave jumper settings of the IDE chain.

Good advise Dave..... yesterday I changed my CD drive (which was nackered)
from an old computer but forgot to check the master-slave setting first.
Yep!! I had to take it out again and correct the setting
